I would like to know if the Deere 485 backhoe or Woods BH90x backhoe would be a better choice for the 4720 cab tractor. Does anyone have a cost for the woods backhoe?

The 485 mounting to the 4720 is the cat's meow. But the hydro thumb option on the Woods is hard to beat, I believe there's also a valve adjustment for the swing so it can be slowed down for smooth operation. If your going to taking the hoe on and off alot the 485 is the way to go. If leaving it on the Woods has a little advantage in the specs.

At the risk of confusing you even more, here is another suggestion. I had the JD 447 BH on a 3320 O/S and now have the equivalent Wallenstein on a 3320 Cab.

The Wallenstein mount is much easier to R&R than the JD. You don't have to worry about the rockshaft being perfectly adjusted for the system to work or connecting and disconnecting the Power Beyond hoses more than once if it is not adjusted properly. I'm not 100% certain, but I suspect the 4x20 / 485 system is very similar to what I had before.

I believe Wallenstein has a BH with similar specs to the 485. No idea how it compares to a Woods.

As mentioned, the biggest benefit of the woods backhoe is the optional hydraulic thumb. I would still lean toward the Deere backhoe for the ease of on/off. I believe woods uses the four pin method which would be a PITA.

Cinder, you've peaked my interest, How does the Wallenstein mount. I can't imagine any easier mount than the deere setup.

I don't have a camera with me at the moment, but perhaps tomorrow I could take a couple and post them. The concept is similar to the JD where the BH is lifted and the mounting plates on the BH engage the mounting frame on the tractor and then a couple of pins are inserted. Where the thing differs is the pins are easier to reach on than on the JD and the BH is simply lifted with the outrigger arms not the rockshaft and it is just plain easier to actually get it into position to insert the retaining pins.

I used to find that due to leak down or whatever, that sometimes I had to connect the BH liines to reposition the BH so it could be picked up with the rockshaft. if the pins on the JD rockshaft did not perfectly catch the ears on the BH if would not lift into position to be able to insert the actual retaining pins - even after supposed adjustment by JD. Removal was usually a bit more problematic in that the rockshaft would not lift the BH to remove the pins. I then had to reconnect the BH lines to fine tune and then disconnect again after actually getting the BH removed.

Maybe the JD procedure was not as bad as I make it sound, but the Wallenstein R&R really is easier. Also with the JD 447, a couple of the movements required a very light touch to feather the controls to avoid jerking. Movement of the Wallenstein is smoother.

If the rock shaft couldn't lift the 447 then your relief wasn't set high enough. Mine lifts the 448 but my relief was set low from the factory and my dealer set it to spec when he installed the PB loop. I believe the Wallenstein has a hydro thumb option also. The 485 is the same as the 448 and is now offered with a mechanical thumb. But a hydro thumb would be a better option.

I don't think it was the relief that needed adjustment. It would lift the BH fine, just not the last 1/16" needed to install or remove the pins. It was the "UP" travel that needed to be extended slightly.

The JD tech didn't actually do the adjustment correctly and by the time I found the correct procedure on here it didn't matter any more.

From reading this seems to be a fairly common adjustment problem for those with JD BH's.

Just sold my Woods BH90x w/thumb. Wasn't too difficult to hook and unhook. Nice unit, but had no use for it. Hate to ask, but whats these units going for now?

I believe your best pricing for a Woods BH90-X will come from rosseelsonline.com in Michigan. Good folks to work with-I bought my BH90-X from them and had it shipped to me in California and still saved close to two thousand dollars below a couple of other suppliers. The four point designed connection is not a PITA.
