Deere 4020 went for $50,000

Before I even opened the video I wondered if it was going to be one of the HFWA models...figured it had to be. I had never seen one until a couple of years ago. There was one listed by a seller several times on ebay for $50,000 asking price. If I remember correctly it was an unrestored, completely original low hour, ( I think side console). I work with a ton of people who still have 4010 and 4020's and I printed the auction and took it to work and showed it to everyone and no one had heard or seen one. The guy eventually reduced it on ebay to $45,000 if I remember correctly but don't think he ever sold it off his ebay auctions.

And I suspect Deere is going to start making parts hard to get if they already haven't. Seems the "new" JD is trying to get rid of (obsolete) the old 2-bangers, an older lawn mowers like the 112's. They are also forcing the single store dealers out at the same time.

Around here in Northern, IL we still have a lot of the old 3020's & 4020's in the field but that was all due to two dealerships that Deere has forced out.

Not only has Deere NOT turned their backs on "the old 2-bangers", they're CONSTANTLY EXPANDING their parts support on 2-cylinder tractors as well as the New Generation line. Deere takes heat for limiting aftermarket access to parts markets, but that strict licensing allows Deere to control the quality of aftermarket parts, as well as keeping their own parts as a profitable venture within Deere itself. I've yet to find a part on any of my oldest Deere equipment that ISN'T supported. A neighbor has a mid 80's Kubota with front drive axle issues and cannot get parts. (NLA) I walked in to a Deere dealer last week, handed them a list of parts for a 67 year old corn planter and had them in hand 2 days later. Deere has an obligation to their customers and to their shareholders to do whatever it takes to stay front and center. No other major full line AG manufacturer has managed to do the same. While some of the decisions "Ma Deere" has made aren't terribly popular, Deere stays solvent while their competition is either a relative upstart with next to no "history" in the full line AG business, or has been part of a "fire sale" at some point in their history.

Times change, like it or not. At some point, those who fail to stay abreast of changes get the opportunity to explain to shareholders why their stock is worth pennies on the dollar.

I completely agree on Deere's parts availability. I went in our local dealer looking for some parts for a 1950's vintage sickle bar mower and despite having to go look in some ancient paper parts book, most everything was still available.

I do have to agree with the other poster on Deere forcing out single dealerships though. Not sure how or why they are doing it, but it doesn't seem like a good move from the consumers standpoint. Around here there is one large dealership conglomerate that is buying up Deere dealers as fast as they can. They cover at least 3 states and must have close to 30 dealerships by now.

Seems funnny that we can find parts that don't exist in there system for twenty series.

It really depends on what it is and deere is starting to capitilize on the antique market.

Did have a beginning serial number 4010 and it brought as much as a average 4020 in our area even with a knocking rod bearing. It has been restored fully at this point and the fellow told me he has about 80 in it at this time.

Once the patent runs out anybody can copy the part and make it. It's done all the time if there's profit to be made. Deere has no control over it.

It's not about patents....It's licensing rights to the NAME. Once you advertise as to what it fits, you've got a peck o' trouble. A friend started selling replica seats for letter series Deere. (pre 1952) That didn't work out so well. Deere legal dept made him wish he'd chosen another brand.

Had a chance to buy a pretty sad 4020 diesel for only $3500. It needed new sheet metal along with a full restoration or I could've just kept patching it up for a while and used it as is. I didn't have the funds for the resto as I enquired about a new hood from deere and just the hood was about $1900.:confused2:

It also leaked from about every place possible. It still ran, but needed a hot jump start to get going. I knew the guy selling it for his MIL and they are a tight with money bunch so I was surprised to find out that she had bought a few year old 5320 with MFWD to replace the 4020.

I have a friend who has an early fifties two cylinder M. He said he can't get a new grill from Deere. Does anyone know where he can get one.

Interesting because my friend that the only job he has ever had is working for the local JD dealer says just the opposite. Deere is trying to force dealers to quit selling 2-banger parts. Two of my neighbors who both have 70 diesels are complaining that "good" parts are getting harder to find.

Deere is trying to dictate what parts the dealers are selling to customers? That is a little hard to believe.

2 cylinder parts are available, but I have noticed that they have tripled in price the last 5 years or so. I guess that is still better than not available at all.
