California is about as wacky as they come in protecting the wildlife. A friend of mine was dating a Fish and Game officer and was told this by her.
There is a park in the SF Bay Area with a bunch of deer in it totally surrounded by city. The deer herd has grown to the point of overpopulation and have become a hazard to traffic.
The politicians control what Fish & Game does officially, so they had to hire a helicopter trapping team from New Zealand to come and capture the deer. Once they captured them, the deer were steralized to cut down of growth of the heard.
The helicopter crew was there for a week. Big news all week. Video on TV of how they are saving the deer and all that.
After they had left and everyone was done congratulating themselves, the Fish & Game officers went back at night and shot half the deer on the hush hush.
The helicopter stunt was a huge waste and they were only able to capture a dozen deer, but it made everyone feel good, which is all it was supposed to do.
