You're my kind of sportsman...hunts carefully and calls his shots...am convinced you will get your next BIG buck with iron sights:cool2:

I wasn't always that way. Used to try any shot I could. Sometimes it worked out, other times it didn't. Nothing wrong with it really, I just got tired of tracking wounded deer in the dark and as I got older I got more sensitive about wounding a deer. That is also a reason I don't shoot late. And to avoid the temptation I leave the stand while it is still light. I also got lazy...I like them to fall right where I shoot them and preferably close to a road. Too out of shape to drag a deer very far.

And I'm not sure any of that would hold if a buck of a lifetime walked out.....;)

I'll look into the peep sights. Have never used them before on any gun. I've used open sights on pistols and .22 rifles but never a peep sight.

I do appreciate all the advice guys.

Okay, peep sights sound promising, especially for the visually impaired. Finding the right one could get tough. I really like the Lyman receiver mount sights. They look very traditional and would look natural on this gun. But, they cost close to $100 and mount to the side of the receiver. On this rifle (FN Mauser action) it would have to fit on the right side because the bolt release is on the left and it would require drilling and tapping the receiver ring, which adds cost. The Williams WGRS receiver mount does not appear as well made (but it may be) but it will mount to the top of the receiver in the current scope base holes which would make it very easy to mount. It costs about $40 which is nice but it does not look as traditional as the Lyman. I'll do some more searching.

Now that's an honest statement if I ever heard one.

One other point. You can save a lot of ammo sighting in by bore sighting your rifle. As it is a Mauser action you can remove the bolt and see down the barrel. Set the rifle into a copy paper box with some notches cut to fit grip and forend then aim it at a target about twenty yards away by looking down the bore to your target. Next without touching the rifle or the box see where the sights are pointed, careful not to press your cheek against the stock. Adjust the sights as needed to get both bore and sights looking at the same bulls eye and you have just saved yourself about two boxes of ammo.

That's is the palm rest. This gun was built to shoot off hand at 200 yards. It came from the factory set up for competition shooting. Way back in 1907. Hasn't been used much.

Cartod, I would do it in a heartbeat! That would be so cool to hunt with those guns.....but only in very nice weather, no brush or briars, low humidity......

vtsnowedin, bore sighting is a good idea. I do it when I'm mounting scopes. I suppose a laser bore sight would work as well with iron sights as glass too....but I don't have one of those.
