The back side of one of my horse fields is wire with a top board. All other fields are 3 board. This particular wire fence section seperates my property and a wooded section. Seems this particualar fence section is in the middle of the local deer population's daily route. /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif Which means they have made a mess out of parts of it, if they cant go over it, they'll go thru the wire. Besides breaking out my deer rifle, any suggestions on discouraging deer from thinking they can go thru the wire? I thought about weaving the electric fence strap (w/o electricity) thru it, or surveyors tap, or something like that. Ideas? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

As many times as I have seen it, it still amazes me how a deer can dive thru a small hole in a fence at full speed with barely a hitch in its step. Seems if they can get their head thru, they can (eventually) get their body thru. And if they do it enough times, the wire will soon break. Don't really know really know how to stop it without 1) electrifying it, or 2) putting in fence wire that the holes (grids) are too small to get a head thru.

If you can't electrify the fence and add strips of tinfoil covered in peanut butter then you have no choice but to shoot them. Then come up here and shoot some of mine.

1/4" gauge cattle panels.

You can make deer steps.. they look like an upside down "V" that allows the deer a place to safely jump/cross over fences.

Now that's an interesting idea, any idea of where I could find a pic?

Living in Warrenton, you should be able to notice these on the larger farms. That is where the horses cross while fox hunting. If you ever go over toward Middleburg, you'll see a bunch of them.

I have staggarded fence lines on some of my property. Normal fence run, with say, a three foot break in it, nine foot length run, right behind break.

Seems to do the trick.

I'm not sure of the proper name.. "deer jump ramps".. is one name I've seen.. not sure what the "old timers" called them.

Yeah, those are called "coops". I wasnt sure if this was the same thing. Not sure if I can put one in on this particluar spot, the terrain is not suited to it.
