We are about to bring in some costly livestock (Heritage breed sheep and Chickens) and I fear a Coyote issue. I have spotted a few nearby and the Farmer who owns the property around my house killed three last week.

We are putting up fencing and may invest in a dog but I would like to know what i am dealing with first.

Can someone rec a decent game camera? I would like to see what goes on at night and make a plan from there.

Any Coyote advice would be appreciated as well. Waking up to a coop full of dead Chickens or an injured 500 dollar sheep is not on my agenda.

Thanks in advance!

I have Moultrie Game cameras and i'm satisfied with them. Cuddeback advertises that they have the fastest trigger speed on the market. I would go with either one of those. I'm sure you could get more than a couple of people that would be willing to hunt/trap your property and help get rid of them.

The only one I have experience with is the Bushnell Trophy Cam. I've been pleased with it.

A couple points I think are worth making:
1. You’ll find happy and unhappy owners of every brand out there.
2. You’d be wasting money trying to get pictures of coyotes. First, it’s harder than it seems to get pics of them. Not impossible, just difficult. They aren’t very predictable. Second, having pictures of coyotes isn’t going to save your sheep. Spend that money on guard animals. Whether you see them or not, coyotes are out there.

good advice magis. I was hoping to see how bad of a problem i had but truth is all i need is one to get inside the fence.

Do you think hunting them helps or go straight defense (fence, dog, etc) ?

To protect your expensive livestock do the fence (a good one that an Opossum can't penetrate) and guard dog(s). The camera will only be for entertainment. See link below and the post "Coyote Sez".

I've got one and I like it, so I'm saying get yourself one. 200$ or less

Oh yes, I'd say hunting them helps. It takes a lot of time and you have to know what you're doing or you'll just make them smarter. There are people near you that will hunt them for you. It gets complicated because of insurance and well this litigous society we live in. I would say if you have the time and the inclination, call them, bait them, shoot as many as you can. It's not like they are going to dissapear.

My friend just purchased one for security reasons and we found that in the cold weather the batteries just would not last even a night.
The particular unit used 2 banks of AA cells and operated at 6 volts.
The charger would not keep up.
My guess is that constant scan just ate juice.
Indoors it worked great.
Manual stated it was rated down to -25 but that proved optimistic.
We were using hi cap lithium cells at that.

The store even replaced the unit and second one was not better.

Sorry, can't recal brand but just wanted to 'heads up' possible short coming to watch out for.
