Hey folks, I recently acquired a 1971 david brown 885 and steering had nearly a whole revolution of slack. I removed steering column and found the ball bearings worn out, I am in the process of rebuilding steering now. Upon inspection of gearbox cover I found that someone had cut the bottom of the steering reservoir with a torch It is not a machined cut, it is jagged and beaded. it is just above the transmission shaft. The manual says the reservoir has to be filled with oil before installing steering box because no way to access it after that. I suppose someone thought enough oil would sling from transmission to work. They also had it jam packed with grease and side cup under cross shaft. Now having said all that, my question is will the whole allow enough oil or do I need to replace the top cover. I have searched to no avail to find one but no luck yet. Any help would be great. Thanks Kenny

There's no doubt that I would repair or replace that top cover, and seal it up as the factory intended.
