There is a daily effort to measure precipitation across the USA which results in some interesting maps of the USA and each state, county by county, every day.
If you like to measure rain and snow amounts, this project is always seeking more participants. It does require a particular type of rain gauge, and a minor amount of training which is available on-line. (We still use our Davis Instruments weather station, several hundred feet further from the house, in addition to the standardized gauge.) I'm betting there are a lot of TBN'ers who already measure rainfall. Or would like doing it. There is especially a need for new participants who live "out in the middle of nowhere".
