My 3-cyl D950, is hard to start, and when it does start white smoke comes out of the exhaust pipe and valve cover vent tube. A few seconds after the engine runs, oil starts the spew out of the valve cover vent tube. Changed the rings last year. Cylinders have a small lip at the top, around 0.100", don't know exactly how much.

Doesn't seem to lose coolant. Don't see oil in the coolant either. Don't think block is cracked, but I am not absolutely positive.

I am thinking about putting in new cylinder liners.

Did YOU change the rings on it? If so, you know more about the engine than 99% of the users here.

White smoke (yawn) but oil spewing out of the valve cover means a major breach. Could it be one of your new rings?

Would say do a pressure test first, but I'm guessing you're gonna find something ugly/obvious when you pull the head.

Consider pulling the valve cover off and then starting it??

I'm not a mechanic

Hard to start, white smoke when it does - does the white smoke stop after 10 or 20 seconds and the engine pick up and run better?

If so, when I had that problem I fixed it with new heater plugs on the B1750 - or at least the 2 I could get at without removing fuel tank. Or could it be when you took head off heaters were not reconnected correctly?

The oil sounds like something else . . :-(

Thanks for the posts guys.
I pull the valve cover while engine is running. Lots of oil is coming out around the push rods. White smoke is continuous. It doesn't stop. Oil gushing out like the BP spill down in the golf. I capture it better than those BP boys though. May be I should go down there and advise them :)

I'll keep you all posted on my project.
Appreciate your help.

Does the smoke dissipate fairly quickly or does it hang a round?
Is the oil contaminated looking?

Sounds like your getting blow-by on your rings.

Could you have a valve seal issue? If they are totally gone then it would smoke pretty bad. Valve seals alone are not that big of job and are not costly.

If you installed new rings, and did not remove the ridge at the top of the cylinder, you now have broken rings and/or broken pistons. They make a tool called "Ridge Reamer" which must be used to remove the ridge to prevent said broken parts.

Now it's probably time to take off the Head.:)
