Upstate South Carolina.....I have lots of sweetgum samplings 3-6" 's I would like to cut down. But its now winter and the saps down so my usual treatment of brush killer straight on the stump won't kill the stump/root.

What is the best to do besides ripping them out. Many are just under the edge of the canopy of large oaks on the edge of fescue field. I do not want to disturb the oaks.

Thought about taking cordless drill and drilling a hole then pouring something in the stump. What would be good? Again I don't want to hurt the oaks.

Are stump rot products too strong and will seep into ground and hurt the oaks? There might be 10-15 larger samplings I cut down under one side of the oak.

Don't know how many "lots" is or how big an area they are in but if they are mostly within a few feet of each other (8-10-12 maybe) I'd pull them out 5 or so at a time and be done with it.

According to this the cut stump method will work all year round. But I am not sure if its specific to a certain climate. I cut down several today and used 25% crossbow 75% diesel we'll see how that works. I guess I can crossbow new growth in spring if the stumps bloom.

That's what we typically do. Mulch them to ground level, then follow up with a herbicide when they start sprouting. Try to catch them as soon as they sprout for best results.... and if you want us to come mulch them for you just give me a call:thumbsup:

sweet gum is darn hard to kill.

I have burned them down, disced them up and mowed them for years and slowly am thinning a large stand down each year, less and less come back.

Hey fishfactor, I have about 4 of these in my yard and if you want to come and mulch them down for me, you can have all the mulch. They are probably about 100' high and 2' in diameter. I would love to get rid of them. LOL zman :D
