Planters CUTs with 1 or 2 row Corn/Bean planters???

I have a field behind my property that I lease out to a real farmer who rotates corn & soybeans on it. I have been toying around with the idea of taking back maybe an acre of the field (it is 32 acres) and using the 1 acre I reclaim for my garden area.

I have been looking at Ebay and a few other places and I keep seeing 1 & 2 row planters and wondered if anyone has any experience with these planters and actually using them to plant crops. Many of them are cut down versions of old implements that have been modified & refurbished (6 or 8 row planters cut down to 1 or 2 rows), some of them are newly built units.

Have you tried using these units? If so, what problems have you encounted using them with modern CUTs?

Bob I have been toying with the idea of planting about 5-6 acres of yellow corn for feeding my goats. Friday I picked up 2 CaseIH 800 planter heads. Tonight I will finish mounting them to my homemade toolbar. I will be pulling them with my JD 4310. These things are big and heavy but should work. If they work well for me I plan on going back and buying more of these planters from my uncle and possibly selling some on eBay. Hopefully I will be able to post some pictures of the planter tonight or tomorrow morning.

I have an old JD 2-row corn planter that I've used for the last 2 seasons. The problem hasn't been w/ the planter.. it's been the weather.. drought for 2 years.. then too wet last year all through May. This year I bought an old Oliver 76 Superior grain drill.. I've been working on it.. hopefully I can use it this season.

I'd say this.. old equipment sometimes takes some working on to get it functioning properly.. maybe some new parts.. tinkering to adjust. When it's new.. you usually can call someone.

When I was a kid, we planted corn with a John Deere B with a 2 row corn planter (also a Deere I think). The B put about 20 HP to the drawbar I think (of course it weighed in at around 2 tons, so that makes a difference). So you might want to look for one of those old planters -- make sure the feed mechanism isn't all rusted out and be sure to ask for all the spare plates they have for it (for different size seed).

I had hopes of buying an old John Deere 2 row corn planter at an estate auction last weekend. It was old and a little rusty but in very good condition. It was my great uncle's estate. Problem is, several others had their eyes on the planter too. I was hoping to get it for around $200. It went for about 3 times that. Oh well, I guess I'll stick with clover and alfalfa in my food plots for now.

I have a Kubota B9200 which is 22 hp, and from the looks of the planter even my tractor should not have had any problems pulling it.

Ken, this is obviously a dumb City Boy question for you, but as I look at the planter you offer, it looks like it has give or take 6 cultivator teeth to dig into the soil . . . so when I start my run down ROW #2, why won't those cultivators tear up the seeds in ROW #1?

I've only lived in the country for 10 years, there are some things that still confuse me!!!
