I need to selectivly log 25acres of NC bottomland. I'm trying to get some idea's together for the equipment. I'd love to twitch the logs out like a skidder does. My 3pt will lift 2976 lbs. I'd like to mount the winch on the rear of the tractor. In theory, I would winch the logs to the rear of the tractor, lift one end from the ground using the 3pt, and drive the twitch to the landing.
Here is what I have:
Warn 8K lb electric winch and a 3pt 2" receiver attachment.
I'm looking for idea's on how to set up the 3 pt attachment. I have a buddy who welds.
The entire setup needs to be a 3pt type attachment that I can remove when needed.
If this has been done before, pictures would be great. If it won't work or better solutions exist please post it.

Take a look at my setup, It has no winch but you could add it to a plate welded to the post. You may want to add some gussets to the post if you do that.

I want to do the same thing. In fact have the same winch just 20 years older. There have been discussions here about the tractor alternator being not big enough to handle the winch.
I was thinking about a marine deep draw battery , maybe a type 31, and just charge it up in the barn. I was thinking about mounting the winch and the battery box on a carry all and then adding the chain grabbers to the carry all as well. Weld a wedge of some sort on the bottom of the carry all to act as a brake. Plus a box for all the cahin saw stuff. Evry time I put that stuff in the bucket I forget and dump it and then run over it. Also I was thinking of changing the wire cable to this stuff. Amsteel Blue, Winch Line, Rope, ATV winch lines
I got the carry all. One of the issue with my winch is it has no reverse, just free wheels out. If the cable capsizes on the drum it has to be hooked up to some thing and the vehicle drive away to unspool it. I think when all is said and done a 3 pt logging winch would be better but they now cost over 3k. Still thinking.

A couple ways.
For a winch, I'd look at the heavier duty PTO driven ones in Surplus Center. The one pictured would be a bit light weight, I'm feeling.

Get an iMatch and toss those tongs on the top hook. What you are picturing, won't get your log up very high.

A pic of a white oak log on the tongs.

For a cheap winch try going to a truck salvage yard and look for an old wrecker bed. They had pto winches with a free spool and the gear box has a 2 way trans mission that is live so you can gance spool rotation and they have an auto brake attachment. just put a short pto shaft in it.

Check this old film out. The first half is of Unimogs being used for forestry work; neat little rigs. The action really starts at about 3:00, they even have a high-lead system briefly shown at some point between 9:00 and 10:00.

I can tell you from experience that a marine type battery won't have the amps to run a 8K lb winch without it getting really hot. The marine batts typically put out voltage for small draw devices, but won't put out much for amps.
Good point on the alternator, looks like mine puts out 50 amps (12V) and comes with a
battery w/600 Cold cranking amps. A normal chevy V8 has a 60 to 120 AMP alternator as standard equipment. Using my winch with a 50 AMP alternator might shorten the life of both the winch and alternator due to heat buildup.
The PTO winch sounds like a great idea. I may look around for a military type. I know many of the 2.5 T trucks have PTO winches that are beasts.
