custom hose cost

So I had my local shop make some hoses. The price came to $3/ft for 3/8" R16 hose, $6/ straight fitting and $12/ 45* fitting then $4/ crimp. I know each part is more than it would cost me form a place like DHH but does this sound like the going rate for custom hoses?

none of the places I go to charge to crimp the hose. It is already figured into the price of hose and fittings. Just as an example I priced some 1/4" hose at .31 per inch 3.72 per foot at my local parts store.

My local shop wanted $3.20 a foot and $5.00 per hose for crimping. I went with DHH, they shipped out my hoses the same day and saved me some cash.

You have to call them for custom made hose. For a comparison I purchased a 20' 1/4 R2 hose with male NPT fittings crimped on each end for $37.12. I purchased 2 of these hoses and some other misc. fittings, UPS from PA to ME was $12.72, so they are not gouging on shipping.

Thanks for that info. It looks like they charged about $5.75 per crimp on top of the material cost. I think I will go this route when I get the hoses for my TNT. The hoses I just got were to plumb the rear remotes to get ready for the TNT.

Man Eric, between my 3rd SCV caper, and hoses for my Electro-Diverter, grapple endeavor, you guy gotta be watchin' me! Being new at the Hydro game I wanted to deal locally. Talk about 'sticker-shock'!! Thursday I went in and got the stuff for the diverter valve hook-up: 2- 3/8" hoses 18" long $35- ea.! A handful of ORB 90*s, a pair of Female QD's $11- ea.! Get this! 2- bulkhead nipples w/JIC male (both ends) $14- ea.!! They're just nipples, with a few extra threads!!! Total? $182-!! Wanting to finish the plumbing, (and being a glutton for punishment) today I went back to get the last remaining hoses. They don't break down the crimp/hose cost, but this is what I paid: 2-pieces, 9' of 1/4" hose, w/1/4" female JIC connectors: $56.11 ea.! One 7'-2" and one 6'-4" : 49.34 & 27.44 respectively! Wow!! Glad I'm typing this! 10" of hose on those last ones, is $22- difference??? Well, they're installed, but I'm going back Monday for and explaination! Total for the day $225-!!! I thought when your 'talkin' Hydro, the 'bucks' were in the rams and valves! Boy, am I learning! ~Scotty

Well. I guess no one read my post about hose jobs, pun intended.. Always get an estimate for what you want done. Premade hoses are made in volume, and they can do it cheaper. If you just get the standard hose with pipe threads and add the fittings that you need, you will come out better in the long run. An inch or two over will not make a whole lot of difference, but an inch under will bring you up short. . If you want neat purty stuff, it will cost you because they think you have no other place to go for your hoses, and you need it now. I have taken my INTERNET prices in with me when I purchase hydraulic stuff, and often they will match prices. It won't do much to go back to argue with anyone, because they will say, you ordered it, and you got it. They are not going to take it back. Just go in the next time, with a good understanding of things, and a complete list with measurements, and tell them not to make anything until you have an estimate, and you have agreed on the price.

J_J- I do read your posts, and value your expertise! I can't say that I've paid alot of attention to the Hydro-Line ones, simply, 'cause I didn't quite know what I was getting into, until my recent 'hose-ing'!! A week ago I didn't know an ORB from a JIC! Guess the thing that gets me is that they're 'cutting/crimping' this stuff, while you wait! It's not that I wanted a 7' hose, that's stock, 'on the rack', but one that's 10" shorter, they have to make! They're making all of them, off the same spool of stock! I'll have no problem ordering stuff on-line for future projects, just that I wanted to get my 'feet wet', on this first project, with a local supplier! Obviously, taking them back, is not an option, after all, I told them what I wanted, got exactly what I wanted, and they're installed. I just want to inquiry about their pricing structure!! I didn't realize that those 'wet feet' I was experiencing would be the result of my bladder down-loading, when I saw the bill!! Well Scotty. Many years ago, I had that same [ what the he** is this ] feeling when the hose guy handed me the hoses I had ordered and said, hope to see you again. I walked out with a smile , cussing under my breath, and him thinking he did me a favor, by using the most expensive stuff he had. I guess he thought I had plastic from one of the big company's. Those guys just walk in and say, I want it, is it ready yet, and hand the plastic over. Now, don't get me wrong, he did a good job and used very good hose and fittings, but I really did not need anything that good. Knowledge is power if you know how to use it, and when to use it, and at that time, I did not have it. I am still not sure I have enough even now.

The last set of hoses I got done cost me over $150 for two 10' hoses. Found I have buddy at work whos son works at a tractor dealership and he can make me hoses at cost. I too have thought about getting my own equipment to make hoses. Even some cheap hand crimpers would be nice. DHH has most of what I need.

J_J I read your post on hose jobs. I just thought since they were reasonable with other parts that the hoses would not be so skewed in price. I guess when my hydraulic side link comes in I will be calling DHH to see what their price will be for the custom hoses.

Been paying attention, just keeping quiet. I have learned that sometimes 'tis better to stay silent. I have given the reasonings for dealing local many times. No sense in beating a dead horse or getting into a peeing match. I am not going to change anyone's mind so why bother arguing about it. I do realize that you guys do have some crappy hose shops but just don't paint with a broad brush. If I was making a mint, I wouldn't be driving a 2004 Ford Ranger with a bashed up bed. All I will say is that when you have a technical problem, call DHH and see how much help they are.

Let me add this bit of data. If you need a specific hose measured to the inch or smaller in length, then that particular hose has to be custom made. However be aware that straight line hose are not recommended because the hose will actually move/flex under pressure, and can destroy fittings and rub spots in the hose, and frame. . The recommended way to measure a hose is to allow for a bend or an [ S ] curve in the hydraulic hose run. If there is a big problem with wear, there are different kinds of wraps, hose protectors, etc available.
I have various lengths of hoses that I add together to get the best fit, before I make or have someone make the hose.

I know Eric wanted to use R16 and I respect that, but I tried setting everything up to use stock hoses so if something broke on a Sunday I could go to TSC or Harbor Frieght and get a replacement. Surplus Center has stock hoses R2 in 6" increments. That gets me darn close for anything I'm making. All the hoses on my Ford now are pipe thread fittings w/ no leaks, so I'm not terribily concerned about have JIC fittings. (How about that terminology Kenny, you taught us well).

I think you know as most of us do, that some questions should be asked of the customer before making up a hose. I have seen this many times, where a guy walks in and hands a broken/busted hose to the hose guy, with nothing said, he goes in the back, builds the hose and hands the new hose back to the customer. If the customer is a company guy, he hands over the plastic and walk out the door. Now take the farmer that comes in with a busted hose, he wants the hose fixed or replaced at a reasonable price. In my opinion, he should be given options, of hose grade, good , better, or the best in the shop. He should be asked how it is used, and the pressure, etc.. After deciding on the particulars, he should be given an estimate, and when agreed upon, then the hose is made, to everyones satisfaction. If you have a one hose shop town, you really don't have much choice if you need it now. Have you not had the experience of being taken advantage of? I asked the hose guy one time why didn't you give me options, and he said , you didn't ask. I then said do I have to know what you know in order to ask questions? He just gave me that dumb look.

I know money is money, and service is service, but does it have to be one sided. This is not from one person, nor just one hyd shop. This is real time.

I haven't seen anybody chime in about making there own hoses up with reusable fittings? When I put my third function on, I ordered all the hose and fittings bulk length with straight NPT reuesable fittings and then just added the appropriate ends and the exact length I wanted. The result was a factory looking EXACT length hose, and If I ever blow the line, I just use some of the xtra hose I keep at the house and REUSE the hose ends and no down time!

Yes, that has been mentioned many times. Especially when fabricating things before the final assembly. Also for fixing things in general like on the weekend, etc. They cost more to begin with, but can be used over and over. You have to make sure you get the right screw on fittings for the right hose, as the diameter changes.

The last hose I had made was for a Kubota w/FEL. It was 3/8" x 24" with straight, common fittings on both ends for $36.00 from a different shop than I normally use. I thought it was steep. Back when I was working on my old Bobcat M610 I took all the hoses off and took them to my usual go-to hydraulics guy and dumped them in his shop floor and told him I need all these brand new with new fittings within a few days. There were something like 15 hoses from 3/8" to 3/4" diameter and they ALL had odd fittings that had to have elbows added or adapters threaded to reducers or something else that had to be special ordered. He did all the work within a few days like requested for a total of $320 for materials and labor after a $20 discount. Sometimes it pays to have a good hydraulics guy locally.
