Does anyone know how John Deere, and other manufacturers for that matter, arrive at model numbers for their tractors. These numbers throughout history -- at least recent history -- seem to have not much rhyme or reason. For instance, they do not correlate to HP or any other such objective indicia. Please advise if you know.

Thanks,

JDLou

Depends on which era and lineup you're talking about, Deere numbering changes over time (they've even reused the 2520 moniker for a 70's AG tractor and the more modern CUT). Their modern CUT models are of the general format xy20. "x" represents the relative chassis size and "y" the relative engine size (but a 2520 is less powerful than a 4520). But there's also the 2305 which could be construed as an older model, however I'm pretty sure the 303xE series are new. In short, there really isn't much rhyme or reason to it that we can see externally, but I'm sure the product managers know exactly why their model has that number associated with it :)

Hey JDBower and nunyabinis:

Thanks for the responses; the press piece link was particularly informative.

JDbower -- I, too, am a Jersey Boy (northern NJ shore) now living in north central Massachusetts. Are you the central part of the state? Is Padula you Deere dealer? After posting reply on the main board, you oculd try a private message and I'll see if I can figure out how to actually get it:)

Thanks,

Lou

Just a minor edit:

John Deere recently introduced a new model numbering system that they'll use from now until they change it again.

:D Thanks for the link, now I understand the new 3000 series models a bit better and hopefully they'll stick to it.

JDLou, I bought the tractor from Farmingdale Tractor back in Jersey but I now use Padula Brothers (although it's only been once).
