I am a first-time tractor buyer looking for the right compact for my property. I have about 1.5 acres of lawn (more accurately field), and plan on a .25 to .35 acre garden, along with other odd landscaping and planting. I could get away with a small lawn tractor but the tillers one could pull would make tending to the garden time-consuming. I also like the utility a FEL offers.

I'm weighing a Cub 5234d and a JD 2210. For the implements I want (54" mid-mount or rear finish mower, 42" or 48" tiller, FEL) the Deere is about $1000 higher, and the nearest dealer is about 40 miles away, I have a Cub dealer about a mile from my home.

I've read nothing but good reports on the Deere here, but seen very little about the Cub Cadet CUT line. Does anyone in this forum have experience with Cub Cadet CUTs, specifically the 5234d? How does it it compacre to the the other major manufacturers in terms of reliability / longevity?

Thanks in advance!

I perfer the CC. I think you get more for your money. You might want to post in the CC forum. There are several people there with 5000 series Cubs.

I have a 5234D. I have been very happy with it so far. I had a transmission problem and it was taken care of by the dealer and Cub Cadet promptly. Also I had a very slow leak from the lift cylinder and that was replaced under warranty.

Here are some photos of my tractor with a Woods GTC40 tiller, a Woods PHD25 with a 12" bit, and a 6' rear blade I use to remove snow.

I also have a Woods 5' rear blade, a 24" dirt scoop, a Woods 5' landscape rake and a carry all.

I tested the JD2210 and the 5234D the same day. I am 6'5" and was more comfortable on the Cub than the 2210. The Cub feels like it has more leg room to me. The FEL joystick gets in the way on the 2210. The Cub was also about $2000 less. The 2210 is a great tractor, but the 5234D just fits me better.
