Not surprising to me. I had to make my selling dealer aware of bulletins concerning my 5254. Even then they couldn't handle the repairs properly. Had to go to another dealer. But I have to say that in the end Cub came through for me.

I don't mean to sound like a jerk, but CubTech said in regards to the 1042, "Also, the unit has to be operated at FULL throttle while mowing."
I have never-ever heard of that, the full 18 HP peak output of the machine's engine being needed to mow all the time? If that is the case, it's just a plain stupid design, and as I have now physically seen the 1000 series drive system I have to state my humble opinion that it IS a stupid design. It is IMHO a cheeso little belt with a cheeso little tensioner mechanism. Maybe good for a 10 or 12 HP engine, but now they are trying to push 19-27 HP through it? Just is not going to hold up IMHO kiddies /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I don't know about other models, however my 3204 had to be at full throttle to mow. The 5254 has to be between 3500-3600 rpm, near full throttle, to mow.

NEAR full throttle is right, it is called HSPT- High speed, part throttle. It is where gas and diesel engines are engineered to be at their peak efficiency.
To put an engine into a machine that has to run at full throttle all the time at top governed speed to perform its function is not right- if it had to work that way fine, but sorry it was not right. There is a difference in manufactirers ratings on engines between PEAK (Maximum) and normal operating power, which is HSPT- often a few HP less than the PEAK rating given by the engine manufacturer.
Put into layman's terms, think about a car you buy. Which will work best? An efficient one that works briskly and properly at part throttle, or one that has to have the pedal jammed to the floor all the time just to work at all?

LT/GT's and passenger vehcles are goverened in completely different ways. You cant compare the two. If your car was setup like a typical LT/GT, it would rev up to about ~2000-3000rpm with the pedal floored. 'Full throttle' on a modern OHV LT/GT engine is nothing. It's about 30% of the RPM the engine would blow up at (if run there long-term).

I've never seen a mower that was supposed to be run at part throttle. You need the blade speed to get a good clean cut - it has little to do with the horsepower required. Also most modern mowers are designed for lowest emissions when running full bore. Another example of an engine designed that way would be the gas generator in my motor home. It is made to run at full governed speed all the time. Anything less would produce electricity that was less than 60 hertz. That would not be too good.

Yeah, its WOT or nothing. HP isn't part of the equation. Todays engines are designed to run at WOT, that is where they are the most efficient. Its old school to run at lower throttle because that is how engines and manuals read then. My 5hp Pony tiller says I should till using just enough throttle to turn the soil and not run at wide open. Huh? Wide open baby. I'm moving earth, not tiptoeing through the tulips. Gotta run them where they are designed to run, they actually will break in better, run more efficiently and last longer.
