I'm trying to decide on a Cub Cadet 6284 28 HP Caterpillar or a Kubota B7800 30 HP. I can get the Cub Cadet with FEL for $14,700 or the Kubota with FEL for $17,000 - both include tax. Will be used mostly for landscaping and field cutting. What do you think?

If you plan on keeping this tractor for many years, the price difference becomes moot. Go with the one you feel most comfortable with, because you're the one living with it nobody else!!

I agree with timber, i think the kubota is a superior machine! You get what you pay for when it comes to iron.

Well,let's compare the 2 machines:

Engine:
Kubota-30hp @ 2600 rpms/22hp PTO Kubota 4-cylinder
Cub-28hp @ 3400 rpms/21hp PTO Perkins "Cat" 3-cylinder

Advantage-Kubota

FEL:
Kubota-54 or 60" width,1060 lbs @ pivot pin
Cub-48" width,725 lbs @ pivot pin

Advantage-Kubota

Hydraulics:
Kubota-9.5 GPM dual pump
Cub-8 GPM dual pump

Advantage-Kubota

Rear 3PH:
Kubota CAT-I with quarter inch valve,1655 lbs @ lift point,1300 lbs @ 24"
Cub-CAT 1 with position control,1150 lbs @ lift point,950 lbs @ 24"

Advantage-Kubota

Weight:
Kubota-1741 lbs
Cub-1968 lbs

Advantage-depends on the application-for FEL work-the Cub,for mowing,etc-the Kubota

Drive system:
Kubota-Hydrostatic 0-11.9 mph
Cub-Hydrostatic 0-11 mph

Advantage-Kubota

I like the Cub-it appears to be a pretty good machine, and the extra weight might come in handy for FEL work, but the lift capacity is lower than the Kubota,so the extra weight might not even be needed. A closer comparison to the Cub 6284 would be the Kubota 7610. I was quoted $13,900 for the Cub with a FEL,and the Kubota dealer quoted me $13,500 for the B7610,and $15,500 for the B7800-so it really depends on what machine suits you best, and whatever dealer you feel the most comfortable dealing with.
I personally feel more comfortable buying a machine that has all of the major components manufactured by the same company instead of the outsourcing of engines,transmissions,etc...but that's just my personal preference. I'll most likely buy a B7510 or B7610 after the first of the year, maybe a B7800 if the price is right then.

I'll throw my vote in for the Kubota. I'm just not sure I trust the 5-6000 model Cubs enough to spend that kind of money. I've heard too many owners reporting problems. I'm sure the Cat (Perkins) engine is bulletproof... it is everything else on the tractor I would worry about.

I agree with the others, I'd go with the B7800. However, that position control on the Cub's 3 pt. hitch will make it more useful/easier to use. The quarter-inching valve is the B7800's only drawback IMHO.

Like Timber, I'm biased.

I'm with you 100% on that, but if that valve is the only drawback-I'll deal with it when the time comes.
