I purchased a early 90's cub 1864 with a 54" deck and 45" snowblower a couple winters ago for 1700. The tractor has 500 hrs on it. I had the motor torn down and the seals replaced to solve an oil leak last fall. Near the end of the winter i could not get the pto to disengage. When i removed the blower and istalled the mower deck this spring the pto worked fine for about a month then the pto started acting up again. Now the mower is stuck engaged. I have to take the belt off the pto pully to move in and out of the garage. I dont know if it is a problem with the switch or with the actual clutch that engages the pto. Has anyone had this problem?

You are more than likely facing a clutch issue. Have you checked it to see if there is excessive moisture gathering inside? If it is you can possibly clean up the rust and moisture but you will need to seal the housing well so that you dont encounter this again. Hope this helps. Let me know what you find out.
Good Luck:D

I have not checked it. How hard is it to get to?

I believe the bearing for the PTO clutch could cause your symptoms if it was bad and siezed up. Near the PTO clutch (on the left) should be a plug in for the 2 wires that engage the clutch. Unplug that connection to see if the clutch disengages. Please find below a website for operator's manual and a link to Messicks for parts breakdown. There are also some bolts and locknuts for adjustment of the clutch around the perimeter of the PTO clutch. Generally these need adjustment when the clutch will not engage. I suppose those could be adjusted to the point where the clutch would not engage but I believe it would slip.

I do not have an 1864 but a 2084 which is similiar and a 90s vintage. The front grill comes out easily as well as the engine compartment side covers. This should give fair access to the PTO.

Well i finaly got to tear into it. I unpluged the lead that goes from the switch to the pto and it is still engaged. I took the clutch appart and cleaned it but there was minamal rust in it. I guess my question is should I be able to move the magnet at the bottom of the clutch by hand? It appears to be stuck out. When i put it all back together it was still engaged should i just give up and buy a new clutch?
