Hello all. I have a Cub 1863 that was given to me by my Dad. It cuts lawn beautifully. But, the PTO is always on. Therefore, it starts hard. How can I check if the problem is the switch versus the PTO itself. If I unhook the switch, would that normally cause the PTO to shut off? I'd appreciate anything.

Disconnecting the switch would remove power to the PTO so if it's still engaged, it must be a mechanical problem. When the PTO is disengaged you should be able to insert a .020-.025 inch feeler guage at several points between the clutch disc and the hub. There are spring-loaded bolts that can be tightened/loosened to adjust the clearance. It's possible that the spline has rusted to the disc and needs to be cleaned.
