Cub 149 steering

I have a cub 149 hydro and the steering shaft outer tube came out of the gear box. There is a lot of play in the gear box ( 3" to 4" inches of steering wheel travel). Is there a seal in between the steering shaft outer tube and gear box or is it a pressed fit? I tried to get the steering wheel off, but dont know the secret. Tried adjusting the play out by tightening the nut, but then you could feel the gears and it made the turning tight. With that much play, should I be looking at replacing the gearbox?
