While I feel for his family, he was kinda crazy... I don't think he did it for the camera as much as he did it for him.

Hate it for his wife and kids. He was probly a little off, but so am I. He seemed like he was genuine and a good guy though.

Freak accident, it seems. Initial press report talked about poison - it's just a very sharp barb, and most injuries to humans happen when we step on a small stingray semi-submerged into the sand of shallow water (hmm, lots of "s"). Anyhow, they are not intrinsically harmful, and "stingray city" in the Cayman's has lots of web-based footage of folks feeding them (it's a tourist trap, but fun - and the rays are small, not the multi-hundred pounder variety that zapped the croc hunter). That said, centering oneself directly over a stingray that is not used to your presence is an invitation to have a barb headed one's direction, so when I'm playing with one (you can usually stroke one if you approach very slowly) I stay away from the rear quarters.

My son was in Austraila for 6 months as an exchange student this year. He went and saw Steve's Erwin's show. He enjoyed it.
I was stung on the hand by a string ray last year while surf fishing in SC. I can tell you it is one of the most painfull days of my life. I was lucky on two counts, my sister called their family doc. I thought she was going over board be cause it did'nt hurt. The doc told her that I had about 10 min and extream pain would set in. The remidy is very hot water. Sounds crazy but it was like night and day. I was doing fine with the hot water but I was convinced I needed to go to the doc office to make shure the tip did not break off in my hand. I loaded up some zip lock bags with hot water and off we went. By the time we were stuck in beach trafic, my water had cooled! Very painfull 20 min. The stinger did not break off so I was good to go. For 6 months the flesh arond the point of attack, rotted and no feeling

Accidents happen...I think he went really quick though cause the barb went straight into his heart.

The reports I saw said he was hit in the heart and died quickly.
The other horrible thing about this is that his eight year old daughter was with him.
As I'm typing this, I'm watching the wifey and kids playing on the playset. Can't imagine what it would be like for them to not be here or vice versa... I once said to the lady that cleaned the bathrooms and windows where I work, "Its a crazy world." She said, "Nope, its the people in it." I was wrong. She was right.
