Nice day today. Still warm this evening and it's raining. This is ski country, but no snow and now it's raining. I doubt it will get cold enough to freeze.
Instead of pushing snow, maybe it is time to take the boat over to Steamboat Lake for some fishing.
Well, that rain only lasted for minutes. not even a tenth of an inch. But today we finally have overcast skies and cooler temperatures. Not freezing, but cooler.

We've had nothing but blue sky and warm sunny days for months now. That's nice, but we do need some snow as well.

Hoping for snow, lots of wet slushy snow.

Here in SEPA, it’s usually relatively mild winters 30-40 degrees with an occasional heavy snow, but it never hangs around much more than a week. It is rare to see temps drop in the 0-10 degree range for sustained periods.
This year has been different.

1. I have never seen a continuous snowpack that we have. It started with a 15” snowfall followed by 1+ inches of ice. This has gone from ~ January 7th until February 17th. 40+ days with a continuous snowpack is something I have never seen in my lifetime and even with some recent days in the mid 40’s, it’s still here.

2. ~2 weeks ago, it got so cold, my DEF tank froze and took out my DEF pump. It actually started working again, now that it’s warmed a bit, but being replaced under warranty.

I can’t remember the last time it got that cold.

Here it is nearly the end of Feb. and we haven't had winter in the Colorado Rockies yet. Still sunny and warm. It's 64 degrees this morning...in the shade. No clouds, no snow. The creeks aren't even frozen.
Nothing about it on the news, either.

It will only make the news if it helps someone's narrative. It's been crazy in VT as well. More snow than normal, temps below 30 for far longer than normal, below 0 temps for weeks instead of days. We had below -20 for almost a week, with some mighty chilly wind chills with it. All part of a normal cycle in my opinion.

Since my last post - Feb 7. We are seeing 50F in the afternoon and seldom below freezing at night. The Buttercups are in full bloom. Looking for the first Grass Widows and Yellowbells. Any late snow will rapidly be gone with these temps. The beginning of a major wildfire season this fall - ???

For much of the West, yes, I am afraid so. The Colorado River basin really missed out on snow this year.

All the best, Peter

Anytime you hear 'This Coming Wildfire Season' from the news, it's to scare you into relying on them for information that could save your life. Stay tuned! We need the rating$.
Anytime you hear it from CDF-Cal Fire, it's because they're about to dip into the tax payers pocket for all kinds of nice shiny toys. Again, they scare you into it.
eg:
Drought year? Going to be worse year ever. Everything is tinder dry......
Wet year? Going to be worse year ever. Grass is growing so tall it will spread fast and act as ladder fuel....

It was over 70° here today in northern Indiana, and we had some scattered thunderstorms in the area.
I tornado swept through southern Michigan just north of the state line, taking the roof off a Menards store in Three Rivers. A friend's granddaughter-in-law works there, and was in the building when it hit. Incredibly, she, nor anyone in the store or anywhere in the area was injured.

Update: Late news said that one person was killed and several were injured in Cass county, MI.

I heard Casey Hendrickson talking about the storm on his radio show this afternoon, but I only caught a bit of it.

Woke up at 5 this morning to 31* and freezing drizzle. Alerts from my county to Coos county in NH. By mid day it'll be in the 40's, with warmer weather to come. 2' of snowpack will take a hit. Saw the reflection in a window of snow sliding off barn roof behind me. Sounds like thunder when it hits ground. And you can feel it. Last week, felt ground shake like an earthquake. Internet busybees claimed it was a frost quake, although I never heard of that.

Woke up at sunrise to the most spectacular reds I have ever seen before.
An hour later it is pouring in northeast Indiana!!

Imagine a rain storm in early March in Indiana!

No freezing rain/drizzle here, though it was predicted. Just light rain now. Yuck.

Not sure I'd call it "crazy", actually more like the winters I remember from the 60s & 70s. Skiing and snowmobiling are a big part of the winter economy here, so this winter has been good in that regard. Even after a few 50° days, snow's still thigh-deep in my yard. :)
