Crazy Dog!!

This morning the little mutt ran a large coyote off the property and last summer I watched him tree a 400lb black bear. He's only a 20 lb schnauzer.
I don't know what it is, maybe they run because we have him wearing an orange safety so maybe the orange vest freaks them out. We have the vest on him so any traffic up on the road can see him.
I wish he'd stop that kinda thing because it scares the bejeebers out of me when he does it. I guess he doesn't know or care how small he is. The coyote was about the size of a fair sized German Shepherd, probably three or four times Fritz. I've starting calling him Fearless Fritz but at the same time, I don't want to loose him. However, I'm not gonna pin him up either, I'd rather he be free and happy than held captive. That's just cruel to any critter.
He's chased deer off too but he hangs out with and tolerates the wild turkeys now.

My son and his wife have two schnauzers and they live in the middle of several hundred acres but keep them in a fenced in yard. They definitely make a lot of racket but not sure they could really scare much. I've heard of coyotes luring dogs away so the pack could attack them. Not sure how true this is. We have em as I hear them yapping at night but they never come up around the house.

When we came down from AK in '82 we brought our two year old black lab. He had a grand time here - unlimited acreage to roam and all sorts of new things see & explore. About this time of year in '83 I heard a commotion in the yard and going out I saw a coyote trying to "make friendly" with the lab. I yelled & yelled at the lab but he had other things on his mind -(sex). This coyote finally sasheyed out of the yard but with my lab in close tow. Looking down into the valley I saw four or five other coyotes milling about. The first coyote lured my lab right to this pack and they all enjoyed a very expensive breakfast.

The local vet confirmed that this was not an unusual practice for coyote packs in this area. The easy answer is to fire a gun into the air, scare off the coyotes and leave your dog with a dumb, befuddled look on his face.

This is just one of several amazing "hunting techniques" I've seen coyote packs use in this area.

Yeah, there is schnauzer like that which lives across the road from me and it is a royal PITA, since it barks at every and anything that comes down the road. It scare the bejeebers out of me when I'm at the mail box with my back to it. It actually wants to attack but ain't that stupid. Sheeze.
I'd rather hear the coyote howl........no offense meant to your Fearless Fritz however.

The easy answer is to fire a gun into the air...

Aiming at a bare patch of ground or one of the coyotes might be a little safer.

I wouldn't waste the ammo, aim center mass on the coyote.

I know we have them near us, I often hear them in the holler below the neighbors house, but have yet to see one.

I would try to break the dog of his stupid habit.
Let me tell you my experience
I was selling a plow and the guy that was looking at it had a big Tom cat with him
I told him my dog was running loose and hated cats. He said the cat could handle any dog. When my dog came back the cat stood his ground and hissed. By scratching my dog he lasted another ten seconds. Before the dog killed him

Around here there isn't much that is safe for a dog to chase. I've taught my dogs to not chase - after the unfortunate loss of the first dog. Cows, deer, coyotes, skunks, badgers, porcupines, raccoons --- all can do serious damage or kill you pet.

We have to keep our new rescue on a leash most of the time. She's mostly golden, but has quite a nose on her and evidently a lot of tracking instinct. She'll scent a rabbit trail (or coyote, or deer, or turkey) while out walking and she is off like a bullet. As in hits the end of the least and flips herself completely off her feet. First week we had her she both scented and saw a deer, pulled out of her collar and was GONE. Wife was heartbroken. She finally came back on her own after about 2 hours.

We keep Fritz in at night. I built a covered and fenced in dog run he can access from the house via a dog door if he needs to do some business at night or if it's raining out. He really hates the rain. He's gets to go out after sunrise and has to be in before sundown.
