I mistakenly posted this problem in the buying and pricing section. Thank you to the kind gentleman who re-directed me. I just purchased a Kubota B1750D 4x4. Excellent condition. 369 hrs. No idea of the year. Pre-Hydrostat. My first tractor ever. It had been sitting in the previous owners un-heated garage for a while un-used. The Problem: When attempting to shift the main gears the clutch, at times, doesn't want to disengage. Sometimes I depress the clutch pedal and shift successfully and sometimes no go. Grind. Also. When shifting is successful, move machine ahead, or back, depress clutch and grind. I immmediately shift back to neutral and grinding stops. High or low gears. I have no reason to believe I have purchased a problem. The previous owner had no problems with it before. It has been sitting un-used. I would appreciate any opinions. Thank you.

Sounds to me as though the splined transmission input shaft(on which the clutch plate rides)has rusted from non-use and is not consistantly dis-engaging completely. I'm not sure of Kubotas, but my tractor has an access panel on the bell housing(clutch housing) to allow you to grease the release bearing coller. If you have such access to the release bearing, try greasing the bearing; use very little as you don't want grease on your clutch plate. After lubing, work the clutch pedal to distribute the grease along the shaft. This should help

I would look at trading it in and purchasing a new 'other' orange tractor.
The problem(s) will be fixed!

Just kidding.

Thank you Patches. Same advice my auto mechanic suggested. Will give it a try.......Llloyd....I just picked up a 5 gal container of wax for you to use on all those shiny new implements. I'll just wait until you get tired of waxing and buy your orange for half the price.....:) ps: get a job......

Recently had a clutch problem. the clutch would not release.after removing the FEL and seperating the tractor engine and transmission found the throw out bearing was frozen and the yoke holding the bearing had twisted loose so clutch was not being released.
the shaft holding the release bearing in alignment was coated with grease mud grit and rust. think this build up caused the throw out bearing to rust and seize. I figure that not using the clutch helped in the build up of this material.
Maybe this will help in your plans on the repair.

As an aside, the clutch plate may be hanging up on either the flywheel or the release plate. If all else fails, try nosing up to a large tree as a stop and slipping the clutch for a few seconds. This will clean any debris from the flywheel/pressure plate. Just a couple seconds will do,as you don't want to wear the clutch disc unnecessarily

Boomer: when you say the following:

"When shifting is successful, move machine ahead, or back, depress clutch and grind. I immmediately shift back to neutral and grinding stops."

Do you mean you still have the clutch depressed? If you shift into neutral and the grinding stops while the clutch is still down then I feel you have a problem in the transmission as well as a stuck clutch as the others have suggested. If you did mean the grinding stops after you shift into neutral and release the clutch then I would say it is a bad clutch release bearing. Sometimes you can lube them, but my guess is you will need to replace.
