I have an onan that needs to go from one machine to another. The problem is the good motor only has a short taper not straight shaft.

the donor has a blown motor and spun bearings so crank swap wasn稚 possible
So an attempt at a budget salvage

So I cut off the straight portion of bad crank, drilled to accept the 3/8 bolt that taper crank is tapped for and then bored the taper



Run out is 0.002, next to get a 5” 3/8 fine bolt to hold on the taper and then decide if I cut a secondary key or weld



run out is so good, welding concerns me but hand cutting that keyway on the crank is going to be a pain. It would also be a custom key, straight transitioning to 1/2 moon on high side of taper

Shaft may see some shock loads

If you have a good taper bored and the parts fit good, a green Loctite bearing retainer might hold. Call them. Removal of bearings that have been "retained" are nearly impossible to remove without heat.

I would prefer it to be gripping on the taper rather than a weld at the end and along the old keyway. It would be less stress risers. I half heartedly considered rusting the two things together with the single end bolt to support and hold compression LOL

Your sleeve fix is weaken by the existing keyway in it as the wall thickness is very thin. Maybe a thru dowel toward the end?

Only at the edge, the hole is tapered also
That was my consideration on in welding it up, I just don’t think the distortion is worth it.

Basically is is this minus the 61$ to buy it

They kept it as straight key and tapered that also as not to engage the crankshaft. I may want to tie it it or just go w end bolt and taper. A good taper match should hold quite well, just like all my milling machine heads
