Crankcase oil capacity

Hey all. Here's a shot of my recently new to me 1973 Ford 4000 SU.

I'm curious if anyone knows what the engine oil capacity is. When I first got the tractor the oil level showed over full on the dipstick.

I have 2 manuals for tis tractor. One lists the capacity at 7 quarts, the other lists 10 pints for engine and 1.7 pints for filter.

Yesterday I changed the oil and put in 6.5 quarts and it showed way over full on the dipstick. I ran it fer a bit to fill the filter and after it settled for a while it still showed over full.

I'm thinking maybe wrong dipstick..

How much oil you guys put in?

Tractor Data shows oil capacity as 7 qts. You might be onto something with the dipstick

Hey kuschneider, thanks for the input and the link to TractorData, I really appreciate it. I'm gonna start looking into what the dipstick length should be but for now gonna be happy with the seven quarts.

Looks like I have my answer.

The Yesterdays Tractors website lists 2 available dipsticks for the Ford 4000. The 4 cylinder tractor used a dipstick that is about 14.75 inches long which is what I have in my 3 cylinder machine. The correct dipstick is significantly shorter.

Well, if I had my choice, I'd rather my dipstick be longer than expected. :wink:
