The crankcase breather systems on diesel engine are often overlooked.

This was the demise of the 350 C.I. diesel engine used in several GM cars in the 1980s...the crankcase breather would malfunction and the engine would spit oil everywhere causing lubrication issues. BTW, that 350 CI diesel was a good engine. It rarely failed but accessory bracketing was designed for the gasoline version and failed on the diesel. It had very high compression and there were hydro locking and engine damage issues when driving through standing water. The bottom end was very tough.

I have a 2003 M-F 231S that uses the Perkins 903.152 engine. Can someone tell me where the breather is located and what parts (filter, etc) need servicing?

The engine runs well, has what appears to be normal crankcase pressure (little pressure with oil fill cap removed) and uses no engine oil, no smoke at cold start and the engine oil remains clean for hours after an oil change (Mobil Delvac 1300 15W-40 with Wix 51515 filter).

Help appreciated.

Well, I answered my own question. There is no "breather assembly" or other hardware that vents the crankcase gasses from this engine. I have been advised that there is a nipple at the top, front of the OHV cover with a piece of hose that vents to atmosphere. That's it...no gauze, filter, oil trap just a piece of hose.

This thread is done.
