Covered bridges

Yes there is!! I live in Douglas County, Oregon. We have six or seven within 50 miles. Some are covered pedestrian bridges.
At one time Oregon was in the top three states with covered bridges.

Eric Sloane is known as the "Painter of Bridges" Look up his paintings. He also authored several books on americana. Several books about bridges. I have a Painting and print and several of his books.

Growing up in Texas, I had no idea about covered bridges. I admit that until I read this thread, I still didn't know why they were covered. I had always assumed that horse-drawn teams pulling sleds, wagons, and buggies were less apt to become spooked when the river below was hidden from their view. Finding out that the main reason for building them as a preserving method on the bridge timbers makes perfect and better sense. Even so, I think I'd rather take a team across a covered bridge than an uncovered one if water is rushing below.
