Good morning to all of you,
I'm in need of instructions for mounting the coulter on my IH 310 14" single bottom breaking plow. Need to know it's location in relation to the plow point, and also it's running depth.
With the plow on a level surface how high should the coulter wheel be?

I had to disassemble the plow to straighten the beam a bit. I didn't mark or measure the location and there is no wear pattern or marks to go by to put it all back together.

I'd ask one of the old guys in the neighborhood but after looking around I found out I'm him.

Thanks for any help
David

Adjust it to where it is about in line with the plow shin leading edge and about 2-4 inches deep into the soil. Ken Sweet

I set mine up about like Ken recommended here. If the bottom of the share or point is 6 inches from the top of the ground, the coulter should be deep enough to cut the sod cleanly, mine are set at about 3 inches deep. I think I need slightly more clearance between the point and the coulter, we have thick sod here, it hasn't been plowed in 20 years or more.

If they're too deep they lead the plow towards the surface, too shallow and sod will tear.

According to Ferguson, the coulter should be about a half-inch to an inch towards the land side, never on the inside. The manual I used is located here:

Ferguson Moldboard Plow Service Manual

It's a bit of work to download all the pages, but a good resource once you have it.

Thanks guys for the great info. This is somewhat like I was thinking but the plow wasn't close to this when I took it apart.

I'm certainly not the original owner. I got it almost free because of the upward bend in the beam. To be used with the bend the top link just needed to be adjusted out longer. It just bugged the heck out of me because of the bend. I took it to the railroad shop that I retired from and in about 10 min. had it straight as an arrow.

Thanks Chilly for the link to the manual. Lots of good reading.

I'll let you guys know how it works once I get it all back in running condition.
