good evening fellas.i just bought a 12v fillrite fuel pump i have installed some alligator clips on the terminal ends to be connected to a battery.so to my question.which vehicle do i hook the clips up to?do i hook the clips up to the truck, which the fuel will be in a 30 gallon drum in the back of the truck,or the actual tractor's battery?
thanks,

Alligator clips will create sparks
have them as far away as possible from the fuel

As it is a standalone pump, electrically it will make no difference. I would connect to the truck as it would probably be easier. As a safety precaution, have an earthing lead to connect the truck body to the tractor body. This should reduce the posibility of static sparks. Connect it before starting to pump and leave connected until you have put the nozzle away. Don't forget to remove the lead before driving the tractor away :D .

I would most likely get rid of the aligator clips as they cause a spark as previously mentioned. Go get yourself a satndard 12V lighter plug and you can set it up for your truck or tractor.

I'd simply install a toggle switch in the hot line and after you attach the clips to the battery, use the switch to power on and off.

On my pump, it already has the switch on it right near the handle to preclude sparking when you hook up the clamps.

It is the peice that the fill handle sit's on, you have to lift it, after you remove the handle.

That said, I use whatever I am filling's battery, or walk out with the booster battery if I want to fill jerry cans etc.

As long as the pump's power switch is in the OFF position, the alligator clips will not spark when attaching to the battery... as long as they are making good electrical contact, they will not spark when the power switch is turned ON.

Probably not required for the situation at hand but...

The safe way to connect jumper cables or gator clips for a pump or whatever is to connect the hot lead (typically red) to the plus (+) terminal of the battery. Then connect the black/ground (-) lead to a grounded part of the vehicle quite a ways away from the battery. (alternator bracket, manifold, whatever is grounded.)

Then if any sparks are made they won't be close to the battery. Batteries can put out hydrogen gas which may collect under the cap of a non-sealed (conventional battery) during charging and can explode blowing up the battery and showering you with sulphuric acid and lead shrapnel and chunks of battery case.

I have never witnessed a battery blowing up but a welding spark went near the vent cap on a nearby battery and ignited the hydrogen gas. The battery didn't get blown up but it blew off the screw-on caps with such force that they hit the 25 foot ceiling really hard. I was lucky the fuel-air ratio was not within the really explosive range or things could have been much worse.

1*&2*I turned that switch on and left it on.
I clamped the pump and battery charger clamps onto the two lag bolts shown and leave them like that since they are never moved again there is no sparking created.

PS BTY how do I use the resize feature on photo bucket to post smaller pictures that you don't have to scroll up and down & left to right ????

I have three tractors that I fuel with a 12volt pump on my fuel tank. My solution was to use four prong trailer plugs. I only use two of the prongs and leave the other two empty. The wires from the pump have the male fitting. Then I mounted the female fittings to my tractors in an easy to get to location. They are rated for outdoor use on vehicles since there are for trailers, so there's no feer of the weather. They just plug in real easy when I need to fuel up, so you never have to open anything, or connect any wires.

It does take a little effort to wire it up and mount it, but after that, it's a very easy way to power your 12 volt pump. Since it's a universal item sold just about anywhere, you can always add more connections to other tractors if you needed to.

Here's a picture of the one I have on my dozer.
