I'd like to get a ballpark figure on paving my driveway. It's currently stone, so can they just pave over the stone or does it have to be removed first? My drive is about 175' long, so roughly what would it cost to get it paved?

Hi Danny, I've been thinking of the same thing for our new house. Numbers I'm using strictly for a ballpark are $1/sq-ft for asphalt and $3/sq-ft for concrete. A lot will depend on your specific conditions etc. I've also heard that some locales consider concrete permanent and asphalt temporary. The difference, you ask? Taxes /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

Thanks Rob. So, let me see if I've got this straight. A concrete drive will increase taxes and an asphalt one won't?

RobS,

In this locale concrete is considered permanent and asphalt temporary. Big difference in taxes. Most locals opt for asphalt, even some flatwork contractors, due to the tax hit.

Sure would like an asphalt driveway, but 12' wide and 1400' in length plus the garage apron area, yikes /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif!

Mosey,

In my area asphalt won't change taxes any more than gravel will.

I recently had a portion of my driveway paved close to the house. Paid around 1$/sq. ft.

Since watching these "experts" pave my drive way - one of fly by night door to door operations - I think with the help of a few buddies, it would not be that hard to pave the rest of my driveway. It is about 1000ft stright shot to the road and is currently gravel.

Has anybody ever tried to rent the equipment and pave their own driveway?

Eric

Yes, what I've been told is a concrete drive can increase your property taxes. IF we pave at all it will be asphalt. Not so much any tax issues, just cheaper to begin with. We will have a concrete apron in front of the garage as part of the initial construction of our house.

I've wondered on the pricing of this also. Is there a standard thickness that they lay it at this price?

You've now gone beyond my knowledge base on the subject. I got my ballpark figures from a paving guy at a local home and garden show. I was so far from needing the info I didn't ask any detail questions.

Let's hope someone else can jump in here and help both of us out /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I paved a little over 11,000sf (634'x11' driveway and a 50'by40' turn around) last summer.

I "knew" someone in the business and got a good deal. Paid a little over $1/sf. Had alot of prep work that needed to be done and alot of base brought it. They put down a 4" thick slab of asphalt, which he told me was thicker than normal.

Before I had him do it, I had an old client come out and give me a quote. Without any major prep work, I seem to recall that it was going to cost about $1.60/sf.

Therefore, it probably would have cost me $2/sf from a basic paving company.

If my driveway had been in decent shape, I may have decided not to pave it. However, I moved into this house about a year ago. The guy I bought it from had built the house and had not finished alot of things, one of them being the driveway. It was basically still a construction haul road.

It would've been too much for me to fix the road myself, and I figured that I'd rather spend the money to put down asphalt than to spend money on making a "really good" gravel driveway.

Alot easier to remove snow from a paved driveway than a stone driveway too.

If you want pavement, but want to save money, can probably to it on the prep work. Have someone come out and tell you what needs to be done, do it yourself, then just have them lay down the asphalt.
