Cost of 1300 feet of electrical utilities, private poles

As was suggested, call the power company and the phone company and find out what the cost will be. The price may be different between them BTW.

The previous owner of my property put in 4 poles and I finsihed the job with three more. THose three cost approx. $1.5k...which included a step-down, meter and two GFI outlets at the last pole.

Keegs, Gramps Here :)

That's a good price, was that Bangor Hydro (or whatever they go by now) ?
Until shortly before our install, of course, CMP had a flat $75/pole charge

i dont know that "private poles" exist. In general the electrical company will take ownership of all equipment/material leading up to your meter. (after you pay for materials and installation)

Not to say you cant have private run across your own property from a meter to some far flung location, but access to high voltage wire and transformers isnt something the avg electrician can get. AFAIK

A lot will depend on your service provider. I want(ed) to rework the supply to my property. underground in my conduit i place, with a new pole and padmount transformer for a 400'+ run was going to cost around $2K. (plus $250 meter hookup)

I did a construction managament job about a year ago some 30 miles over in another rural area. a local co-op owned electric provider set a new pole, upgraded a transformer and ran underground supply with conduit to a new meter box (about 35' away) they installed for $65.

YMMV

Morning Dave,

We have MPS. It was done spring of '06.

Most of the year my bill is usually $8. a month. They must love me. :)

One more thing I'd add is they have a service that comes in and sprays under the wires to keep veg from growing up underneath. It's set up by default. The spraying leaves a god ugly brown line ...You can cancel the service with no hastles but they do want you to keep it clear.

NYSEG quoted me (for residential) first 100 ft. from road free, $10.00/ft thereafter overhead service including poles and transformer.

But I only have about 500 ft. to go from road so I'm gonna take the 100' "free" to a pole w/transformer then go underground myself for the next 400'.

I just did about 375-400 ft. for another service on the same property 2 yrs. ago. That cost me around $2500.00 hired out including 200A panel in pole building, 4/0 wire. That was a no brainer to hire out, even though I own a trencher. The materials alone would have cost me almost $2000.00.

Morning Keegs,

I keep my brush cut myself hoping they won't think they need to spray. That might be a real chore on a longer line. Too bad my line crosses a wet area that I can't use the tractor/bush hog on.

The trees that are already twice as high as the lines I let them worry about. For our 7,200 volt line, they cut back anything within about 8' of the line using a bucket truck.

It is true that they do things not only bigger in Texas but better as well.
We had electric brought in to our place for a well in 2003. Five poles, the wire, and transformer, are you ready for this? $35.00.
Three years later, the power company hung another transformer, on a existing pole, to bring electric to my animal barns for the outrageous sum of,,,$0.00.
I'm guessing the utility company is betting on getting paid back over the next 50 years or so with the utility billing.

In Central Maine Power's service area, you can have a private line as long as you are the only user on it. After it is installed, you pay an inspection fee before they connect it to the grid. You can convey the line over to them or keep it private. Don't know what conveyance fees may be/probably are involved. CMP provides the transformer and meter on a private line, the cost is included in your elec. bill.

There are a couple of companies who specialize in private power lines here. Some 'regular' electricians will do underground installs.

You would have to run secondary because if not it would require a primary metering bank with CT's, PT's, etc. at the metering point. This primary metering set alone is a few thousand dollars. Many Coops are re-structuring their line extensions because it's only fair you paid your share. All other members are subsidizing your line extension if not.

weldingisfun, what utility is that? We used to offer 7 spans for $0 with $5 membership fee until 1998 or so, then went to first 300' free, then $3.25/ft, then in we increased to $3.75/ft and now we offer $xxxx.xx amount credit based on the laoder whether residential, commercial, small general service, etc. You got a steal.

Just on a residence it may take 30 years to recover the costs of a 300' tap based on margins. Not profits like the big IOU's.

Contact the companies and get an estimate from them. That will give you an idea on what you can and can't do.

I did 1/2 mile 9 poles for right around $9000 in 2003.
