Crunching the numbers now that I really do need to upgrade. Owning the tractor that I now have hasn't cost much at all. Using a conservative value of what I expect to sell it for, it appears that owning cost me about $650 a year. If I were to give it away, the cost would only be $1350 a year. I doubt that I can repeat that on the next tractor due to my age and the price of new machines. I almost never rent. It really has to be a tool with a one time use for me. Something like a trencher or man-lift. I hadn't planned to go with a new machine this time but I simply am not finding anything with the specs that I need within three hundred miles. It gets expensive driving to look at other people's junk.

I internet shopped for 10 months, and then found an excellent Kubota L48 TLB on Craigslist.
Sent the seller 20%, and then drove 350 miles to pay & pick it up.
I was very pleased!

I've spent a little over $80,000 on tractors, implements & maintenance since 1982. Out here it's either have something that can plow snow on my mile long driveway or pack it in for the winter. I choose to have a tractor.

It's ever so much handier to have my tractor out in the carport - than any other option.

The 20%-25% he quotes is for trade in to the dealer. Private sales take less of a hit.

Problem with that line of thinking is that it’s not consistent with the original question re what if he has to sell due to a life changing event.

Any number of things, eg a severe heart attack, home fire, etc, could occur that makes a private sale not possible or practical.

For planning purposes, one should plan for an emergency sale, probably to a dealer, and expect to realize no more than 50% of the original purchase price after a couple of years. Hopefully that would be worst case.

Bottom line is that one has to determine if the tractor is a must or want, and don’t buy it if it squeezes the budget such that you can’t maintain a reasonable lifestyle if things go awry.

That's a good perspective.
If I bought new for 20,000, sold in 2 years for 10,000.
Then 10,000 divided by 24 months = 416 per month. If I only use the tractor 2 times a month (which I'm going to easily do), I'd say it'll still be worth it.
Home depot wants over $300 to rent a BX one day.

Tractor prices are high this summer, both new and used.

Demand trails off during mid-summer and continues to decline until the grass greens up in the spring.

The supply chain hopefully will be in better shape by late October.

There is a reasonable chance net prices will be lower November-December-January-February-March.

Good luck with that scenario after a visit to my local tractor dealer this past week he still had 60 SOLD tractor orders on his desk he could not fulfill.

Congrats on you new tractor. Hope it comes soon and you enjoy it. I have a feeling that you will never again look back and wonder if you should have rented. And, I saw your math. I think there is no way you will need to sell a low hour, good condition, 2 year old tractor for 50%. I am betting it that should happen, it will be more like $13k - $14k. One of the advantages I see owning my tractor is that if I am gone, my wife has a paid for asset she can turn into revenue. about 20K. Best wishes, Larry
