I do question the wisdom of shoppers bringing in soiled canvas bags and bans on paper/disposable cups/utensils/plates etc.

I miss getting the paper or plastic bags, we always saved them and used them for filling our recyclables and taking to the transfer station. Paper, plastic, metal, glass. At Home Depot today... they are charging 8 cents for those sturdy brown bags. I go there a couple times a week for misc DIY stuff. Haven't ever had to pay for a bag but I almost did today because I had a bunch of little stuff that was almost more than two hands could bear. Just can't yet get in the habit of bringing my own bag.

Yup. Same mistake were made in Italy. And it's now happening in Portugal as well. Now it's all over the place.

We still get lots of people that believe it's just a flu and took the Quarantine status as a vacation opportunity.

Just yesterday we had a very nice summer weather and were beaches full of stupid people that can't take things serious.

I've heard that the Germans are getting concerned about the CONVID-19 virus... they've started putting their towels on hospital beds.

And I thought we were pretty much good with thin biodegradable plastic bags and paper bags from the grocery store. What happened with that movement?

Was in town today and a couple unrelated people in different places with a small bottle of sanitizer clipped to their purses. Start of a new fad?

Probably the same buttheads who cough and sneeze without covering their noses or mouths with a kleenex or a hanky.

I may be a senior citizen (70) but I'm very aware of the risks and no way am I about to socialize with family or anyone else. besides, I like being a hernit.

Anybody know a simple source of ethyl alcohol? Denatured ethyl alcohol is a basis in the hand sanitizers that are now sold out.

I had thought shellac thinner was pure alcohol but two major paint lines, PPG and Kelly-Moore, don't carry it. Home Depot has shellac thinner (SLX) but the MSDS says its 50% ethyl / 50% methyl. Methanol shouldn't be used to wipe down skin so that's out.

Anybody have advice for this or anything similar to blend and make sanitizer? (aside from expensive and unobtainable liquor ie Everclear, 151 rum, ?)

You can use gasoline or lacquer thinner. It stinks but kills everything.... Non chlorinated brake cleaner works too. Just tell everyone that is the smell of a good mechanic...:D

Probably should keep my yap shut but.... Gelled fire starter is the same thing as hand sanitizer but has no smell.

The second wave looks more like a tsunami. The lack of testing I expect means many of us are spreading it without knowing it at this time. If China is giving us real data I do not understand why their rate of new cases are dropping like a rock? If that is the case maybe we are about to peak case wise.

I suspect we are a loooooong way from peaking. Peaking will depend entirely on people practicing good health habits and self restraint, neither of which is prevalent in this country today.....

I have a bad feeling that this is going to be one helluva bust.

Norway has gone into 'lockdown', Ireland and France have practically gone into 'lockdown'. Your President Trump was wise to ban travel from the EU (excluding the UK) because all of those countries use the same passport.

Our PM (advised by medical authorities) has "suggested" no public gatherings over 500 = F1 race in Melbourne - cancelled, the Royal Easter Show (The Major Agricultual Show [culmination of all of the other 'Royal' Shows) in Sydney - cancelled. So many festivals/concerts/shows - cancelled. Professional Sport games to go ahead with no spectators.

There's an Federal economic package coming to assist small business (A$150,000 tax write-off = buy new stuff, A$21,000 per apprentice so that they won't be laid off). A A$750 payment to 'low-income'/Aged pensioners (including Veteran pensioners).

Yeah, we're taking a financial hit down here. A bad drought followed by a bad bushfire season followed by this.

BUT. The drought has broken. The bushfires are either out or **** near... we'll get through this too. :)

Wagtail, sounds like you all have a plan going on for protecting your business base. That's good.

My daughter is somewhere in the Northern Territory looking for work,

She picked a bad time trying to extend her Visa.

Again, wait for Monday? give the virous more time to spread?
If that is the effective way do it NOW!

The main reason for delay is to give families time to arrange long term day care, or to work with their employers so they can work from home. The 3 week closure could be extended.

So..., someone makes a wild as guess and points their thumb in the air and says, they think 1% of the population has it............ fear selling news outlets sell a 100,000 Ohio residents have the virus!!! And a poster here parrots the misleading statistic.

Are we not tough strong Americans anymore?
Do we get political credit for being the first to sensationalize bad news?

Our state's health director has been working with pandemic experts, and the estimates they are providing are just that, estimates. They are based on historical data. Everything they've been stating and projecting has been coming true. They've been saying the numbers of cases are doubling every 6 days, and that's been the case nationwide. Based on that, and the estimate of 100k current infections in Ohio, that also projects out to 4 - 6 weeks to our peak. Look back at the comments on this thread from the first day, then 6 days later, and then yesterday's comments. There's a dramatic shift in the tone as this virus is spreading. Look what's happening in Italy, and read some of the pleas from those people. None of what I'm saying is meant to be fearful, but to wake people up so they take precautions, stay away from large group settings so the spread can be controlled better. The virus will come and go and not be dangerous to most of us, but there is a small percentage who's life depends on this thing playing out over a longer timeline so they can get proper health care.
