Purdue university announced today that after spring break, which starts next week, they will hold no in-person classes starting Monday, March 23 for as long as advisable and possibly through the end of the semester in May.

Indiana University announced today something similar at all it's campuses state-wide. They will suspend in-classroom teaching for at least 2 weeks after spring break ends.

I'm still puzzled as to why this particular virus is getting the attention it is getting. Something isn't adding up. What do some know that isn't obvious to me?

It's unusual in a couple of ways:

The effects are serious to anyone who already has respiratory problems, at least as serious as known varieties.

No vaccine or natural resistance exists. Once it gets started in a community there's only treatment for symptoms, nothing to reduce the effect.

It seems to have a higher multiplier - contagion of others per infected person - than other similar flus plus the contagious period can be before any symptoms are apparent. That makes it scary, a PR problem. And the contagion can spread into the health providers requiring them to quarantine and be out of service. In contrast Ebiola for example isn't contagious before the victim is visibly sick so it's easier to avoid.

Most of all, the rate of spread isn't understood yet. Estimates range from minor to plague. This is affecting the economy and therefor the political response.

It still will be interesting to observe and CHANGES to infection or fatality rate with increased awareness of the general population .

Some possible Good news on an Old Anti- Malaria drug (Chloroquine Diphosphate) and Zinc that shows real promise to fight the CoronaVirus.

S Korea and China both have been doing some preliminary treatments/tests with this, but double blind controlled studies will be needed.

I see Cumo is sending in the National Guard to New Rochelle, New York (NYC). There is an outbreak of the KungFlu there, I think 198 cases confirmed, all because some lawyer guy was positive, was told to stay home but didn't and decided to visit the local Jewish church (cannot spell the word but you know what it is) and infected the people there including the Rabbi. How nice of him.

People need to respect it for what it is and not treat it lightly. It will kill you, just like the Asian Flu will and it appears to spread more easily too.

I have this conversation over and over again with my kids, coworkers, in-laws and outlaws. And somehow I am not the most popular guy until it comes to 'donations' to their cause.

I am definitely not trying to get political here... just trying to understand this phenomenon.

It's just getting started and nobody is sure how bad it will get. If there was a strain of the flu causing high mortality rates you would see the same reaction. Also, it's not just the weak and infirm; according to the link which I posted on one of the coronavirus threads it also affects people with healthy immune systems by overstimulating their immune systems.

It's also something different to get excited about besides politics and the weather.

It is natural to fear the unknown.

If someone believes "this is just a flu"....no fear.
If someone believes "this is something we have not seen before"....concerns.
If someone believes "this could kill me or those I love"...fear.

Looking at the people I know, there is quite a range of intelligence and common sense at both extremes. So, using my limited sample, being "smart" and having common sense does not automatically place someone in one camp. Those I know with less common sense (at least how I judge common sense) are in the "its just the flu" camp. but that opinion is based on my limited circle of friends and family....and thus influenced by how my family was raised, and my selection of friends...which is questionable at times...LOL. YMMV

A "gut check" by talking with people you KNOW can be helpful. If people you KNOW are dumb as rocks think a certain way....well....might be a red flag. Harder to do on a forum but still a resource.

Knowledge is power...

Thanks for the link. Sure wish the JH map would go back to showing the counties. I'm just waiting to see the number of active cases drop. Currently it's still rising in much of the world. The good news that I see is that in Hubei, they are down to less than a quarter of active cases from their total. They have also lifted most of the travel bands inside of China.
