I have noticed that when farmers pick/harvest corn they seem to randomly leave a couple short rows of unharvested corn throughout the field..

Why do they do this??

just wondering

Well, it could be any number of reasons but usually it is because of a wet spot or they want to leave some corn for the wildlife over winter.

I've seen them to it here as well, usually just one row every so many rows. Only things I could think of are wind break to prevent erosion or snow drift and goose season ;)

Wind breaks is another reason, there is one farm near Mayville that leaves a few strips back from the main road to help keep the snow from drifting on the road. The critters sure appreciate these windbreaks:)

I agree with Robert in NY.

Also, farmers who hunt dove around here always do that. It provides cover in the field for a great dove shoot.

Another reason, not quite so common, but I've had to do it; Weeds....More specifically, in my case, johnsongrass. You run the risk of spreading it further with a combine. I've backed out of a row and went around particularly thick infestations. When they green up again in the spring, I'd go back with a BIG dose of RoundUp and nuke 'em.

From what I have been told, it is for insurance reasons. Parts of the crop left so the adjuster can take a look at different areas of the field.
