We had another round of storms go thru last night...2nd time this week. The ground (clay) was already soft from the previous rain, so it didn't take much to blow my corn flat. I got out this morning before heading to work and surveyed the damage. Looks like I had a couple of tomato cages blow over, but I will have to rework several ( I only had one stake on each cage).

A neighbor who farms was at my house last night , and he said we got 2 inches earlier this week. I am pretty sure we probably got that much again last night.
I assume you guys in southern Ohio got some bad wind too. I will have my work cut out for me this weekend to straighten things up around here. My corn was pretty tall, not sure how well it will recoup without some manual intervention.

I will take the rain....but enough on the wind already !

Pete,
We had storms go through yesterday in my corner of the state. They seemed to split where I live. Heavy to the south. Heavy to the north. NO RAIN at all where I live. Well I guess that is a lie, we had about 15 minutes of light drizzle. Everything is wilting, even the weeds.

Same thing here, west of you, Bob. Just a few spits and plenty of thunder. We are really hurting for rain. I water my flowers, but don't waste it on the lawn. It is now brown and crunchy except in the shade.

Funny thing about SOUTH BEND. It is on the extreme NORTH border of our State, and it is EAST of the Illinois/Indiana state line, where I live. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

As for the crunchy grass, ours started "crunching" about a week ago. I noticed it while walking the dog. I was wondering what was making noise. It was the grass crunching under my feet! I can't remember when we acutally got rain last. There have been some rains that hit Chicago and Gary north of me. Rains that went south of me through Kankakee. Heck just this week I was driving home from my office (17 miles north of my home) and started out in the rain, by the time I got home it was bone dry. The southern end of the rain brushed north of Cedar Lake, IN which is only a few miles from me. I stopped at the local butcher shop for some grilling meat (rib eye) and talked to him for a while, his shop is on the far west side of Cedar Lake and said the rain ended about a mile north.

My corn is in bad shape. Ditto the tomatoes, peppers, pumkins, watermelon, honeydew, eggplants, leeks, beans . . . . I planted a garden that is easily over 1 acre and I'm not sure that I'll actually have a harvest this year.

The only good weather news we have is that the heat is supposed to break today. Its been brutal with temps in the mid-90's, NO BREEZE and moderately high humidity. Heck the dog didn't even want to go outside.

We got rained out at a friend's house, about 5 miles south of Bloomington last night. Since we needed rain, I didn't mind. Huge lightening, power out, mud and limbs on the road back to town. Wouldn't you know it, at my house on the near north side of town, we only got 1/8 inch!

Pete,

Up here in Northeast Ohio we got some pretty good gusts - probably 40 mph+.

It was interesting ... I was out weeding in the garden when the wind started. It preceded the rain (what little we got) by probably 1/2 hour.

Watched the bands move in on radar - big line west of here headed right for us ...... just before it gets here the portion of the band directly west of us fades out and dissapates .... north and south of us get gully washers and we get diddly.

Yeah, North to get to South Bend.
South to get to North Judson.
And the old joke about French Lick not being anything like it sounds...
Hey, at least we got the time issue all straightened out, right? /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Funny thing is, we have had no rain but came home from vacation to find swallows building a mud nest under our porch on top of the thermometer reading 100 degrees. I don't know where they were getting that mud from. Everything is parched. The birds spend a lot of time sitting in the shade with their beaks hanging open. Don't know if it is the heat or the taste of dirt! /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Randall's right lots of hot air blasts and very little rain here, grass really needs moisture badly. Hey Randy how's the corn coming? We have some here waist high now....

We got it up here in Minnesota too! And yes my corn is down. This is already the second planting of my corn and I don't think I can re-plant at this time of year. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif Was looking forward to the corn.

I'm pretty sure the density of tractors and implements in NW Indiana and NE Ohio, may be causing an electromagnetic anomoly which has been restricting the formation of cumulus clouds required for rain.

I first thought it had to do with frequency of attending church, but then analyzed my situation and had to throw that theory out.

I ran a curvelinear regression analysis and determined there was a strong correlation to the number of tractors and implements owned by TBN members to the areas that had less rain. Those areas with less implements seemed to get more rain.

I am going to put my hip boots on and see if I can wade out and stand my corn back up. Hope you guys get rain soon.

Um-mm do the rest of you guys think that we may need hip boots for any other reasons? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I admit the analysis may be flawed because I didn't take into account the large stockpiles of steel used for grapple building and such (unbuilt implements as you will ), nor the number of tractors that had cup holders versus those without.

Mike,

Glad to hear your corn is doing well. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Here, the early stuff (60 - 65 day) is about 24" tall ... the rest of it is mostly a few inches smaller than that. I'm gonna try to head up to Copley Feed later today for some urea. I haven't been able to water it like I really had intended .... been too busy with work. Lugging water up there 100 gallons at a time is better than nothing but I really need to get the water hooked up in the shed.

I have managed to keep most of the rest of the plants watered though ..... there's some zuchinnis up there (largest is maybe 8"), yellow crookneck (6"), some tomatoes about the size of a golf ball, and a bunch of pumpkins. No peppers on the vine yet. The eggplants have some blooms. The bean plants are continuing to get picked over by the deer - probably lost about half of those.

Had the storms come through our part of the country yesterday. Some places got hit two, three and four times with heavy storms that caused major flooding, mud slides etc. along with power outages. Our power authority called in out of state power companies to help restore it.

This morning it is beautiful sunshine with much lower humidity. Gonna be a nice weekend from here on out the weather man said.

HAPPY 4TH everybody!!

Gerard, same here....humidity is down, temps down....going to be a good weekend. My wife left here before the storms hit...she is up in your country... Saratoga Springs ...for a few days. Haven't talked to her to see what they got there, but I warned her it was coming.

She asked how her sunflowers did in the wind. I said , oh 2-3 may have gotten knocked over. Well, It is considerably worse, so I will try to straighten those out before she gets home. Looks like I need to do a lot of staking.

You too, have a good 4th.

I am sure sorry to hear about problems with storms. My problem last night was that my son's 23 goats and 2 cows got out and ate all of my corn, about 1/2 of the rest of the garden, part of a small apple tree and totaled a small peach tree. I hope the devilish things got a good belly full. I guess my son will be going to the farmer's market and buying fresh corn etc. for us the rest of the summer.

David.... oh my.... I had that problem starting a few yrs back...only it was deer. My solution was to start eating deer. 23 goats is a lot to eat though! That has to be heartbreaking. He will definately have to make a few trips to the local farmer's market for you to replace those veggies. Nothing like fresh veggies out of the garden though. Does your son make goat cheese by any chance?

/ Corn got flattened last night #18
Sassafraspete, it was definately goats and cows. My son came out and caught them at their evil tricks. We have plenty of deer, but so far they have left the garden alone. I have about 10 acres of game food planted, field corn and sun flowers etc. and the deer have stayed there.

No, he does not make cheese. The goats are almost pets, he does take the kids to market a couple of times a year.

We tilled up the old corn and replanted yesterday, maybe we will get corn in late August or early September. The longer we wait, then the better it will taste.

David,

You seem to take my wife's side of an arguement about feeding deer. She says that if we plant deer food away from our garden, they will have enough without coming close to the house. My theory is that while it may work in the short term, the deer will reproduce until their overflow has to eat our garden anyway. Can anyone settle this?

John

I would not try to settle it, but, my son and I keep our freezers full of deer each year. The food plots are real good places to go and look for the deer. Around dark the hungry rascles come out in force. You just look them over, take your pick and get ready to do some cleaning and skinning.
