Jesse,

Here's how I would address your issue. #1 get a good aerator (sounds like you're already convinced of this). Cut the grass as short as you can without scalping. Bag it if you have a bagger. Run the aerator up, down, back, forth and at 45 degree angles -- that's right 4 passes --- tons of little holes and a yard full of plugs. Now the fun part, get off your tractor, grab a garden rake and pull most of the plugs into your ruts.

Jeff,

You had me right up until you said "now get off your tractor". I may try a drag harrow, and hope that gravity causes the material to find the low spots. :)

I like the idea of a top dresser though. Now I just need a compost sifter to sort my compost pile, so that I don't have to buy the material. Besides, that pile is getting so big I may need a bigger tractor soon.

Thanks for the tip "Up is always better than down." I'll make sure to remember that.

Hey, come on. You think the grounds crew at Augusta National thinks that way? :D

If you get the right spreader, you won't have to worry too much about sifting. Mine will spread about any consistency and the brush/thrower breaks up any clumps as it is applied.

At first glance, I thought it looked more akin to a Brinly, but after checking, it is more rugged than that. Did you get it with the three point hitch, or did you get the pull model? My only fear is whether or not it will last. Does it throw plugs well?

I got it with the 3 point hitch...it throws the plugs pretty good, pending you have moistened up the turf before hand. Very rugged attachment, considering it bolts together! I actually considered welding it up, but after over 12 time aerating with it, sturdy as ever...no loose bolts!

I also disagree with the "rolling of the lawn" comments. I have been rolling my lawn every spring for years with spectacular results and zero problems. I, of course dethatch aggressively and aerate properly after rolling in the spring. If people would like, I can show them pics of my "golf course looking" turf. However, if I was planting a new lawn, I would NOT roll out the loam. Seed needs loose soil to germinate effectively.
