I have a coolant leak on my 1983 JD2150 which I haven't been able to detect where it's leaking. Everything in front of the radiator is wet, some damp, some dripping, but there's enough dust caked on things that I can't see the source of the leak. The tractor runs fine until a heavy PTO load is put on it (like brushhogging), and then the temp gauge quickly starts to move from green to red. There is no evidence I have seen of a head gasket failure, no white smoke or bubbles, or milky oil, and I have carefully avoided running it when it starts to overheat, enough that I've avoiding all my brushhogging this summer, and just used the tractor for small chores. Every time I've run it, I've added occasional coolant first.
I'd at the point of tearing it apart to repair whatever is leaking, but I've never torn into it before, and was wondering how much of the cowling can be taken off the front so I can power-wash it, and then run it while observing for leaks. Are there any good resources for tearing down an old John Deere, and what to look for?
