Awfully rusty for lead stock, but I like the business card / advertising idea. Scratch it in some out of view area with a nail and see how hard it is.

How much does it weigh? If it is less than five pounds or so, I would bet on a door stop to keep interior doors from slamming in a breeze.

All the best,

Peter

Was wondering if it was a brick stamp?
Maybe they baked brick pavers there?

Nah, the letters would be backwards….or?

It does look rusty but looks like it might just be plated somehow. It does look like lead in the upper RH corner, as TShep said and he has more than a picture to go by.

Coolest thing found on my property was a Stone Arrow Head. God knows how old it is. :)

Found newspaper used as insulation when we opened the walls in my uncles front room at his place in MA.
Dated 1860's, but most of the pieces were pretty small.
This was the add on, the kitchen/front room were much earlier, wonder what date newspaper the new owners found when they opened those walls during their renovation?

The front bedroom was also the town library around 1890's to 1920's and still had one of the shelves with books from 1880's to about 1910, all in bad shape but was interesting to us as kids.

I found an old uncovered well on my property. Not all that creepy, but the random junk thrown in the bottom had my mind wondering if I’d find a body or something when I started cleaning it out.

I would get that closed off before something like an animal falls in and starts to smell up the area.

The water is fairly putrid. I’m sure there’s tons of dead squirrels and other critters down there. It seems to have been open for several years.

I threw a piece of tin over it when I took possession of the property. Some day I’ll get it properly cleaned out, shock it, then test the water.

I had a brick lined one dating back to the 1920s (?) in the yard. I quietly had it filled in prior to requesting a deep well permit from the county health department. Contamination concern for the new well.

I suppose that would be a good idea if (1) the parts were interchangeable and (2) the part you need isn't broken on the old one too. When I was single I sometimes kept an old vehicle as a parts car if its replacement was a similar model, something that the family aesthetics officer would frown upon today. :ROFLMAO:

I'm sure there are many of us here who keep a lot of old, broken stuff around "just in case", or as Moss noted "gonna fix it up someday".
Before they redesigned everything every year this was completely possible. Best example is a chevy 350 engine. Only thing I can think of that's similar now is the Honday GX engines, they haven't changed much and use interchangeable parts for the most part.

When we were looking for property, two different unrelated parcels we went to look at both had vehicles burried on the the property. One was supposedly a Model T. The other property had several small hills. We were told they were all milk trucks burried to create the hills.

We passed on both properties.

I found the top of a deer skull with immature antlers (in other words taken out of season) wedged in the crux of a tree about six feet up off of the ground.
Sounds like a lion kill.

Not too many people swim in Lake Superior. I tried it once and came out a popsicle. I heard that Edmund Fitzgerald drowned up there though.
Random story, there was actually a team preparing to dive on the Edmund Fitzgerald a while back I was training with. That's really deep, when you try descend at 60 ft/min that's 10 minutes just to get there.

Not on my property but when I was doing some commercial diving we got the job of surveying a wreck in Alaska from 1952 which was starting to leak bunker oil and generate complaints so the coast guard wanted to do a clean up. Pretty popular wreck for divers in the area but very dangerous inside for obvious reasons. Anyway we got in fairly deep to do what we needed and found the what we believe was the pursers cabin with about a half gallon size jug laying there with something inside, being a suckers for neat things we grabbed it...but couldn't lift it. Both of us tried but conditions inside made us hesitant to do much to stir stuff up we didn't have too. We were finally able to both get on this tiny jar and got it to the outside of the ship where we finally figured out it was mercury. Still sitting on my dive buddies shelf I think.

@sea2summit that is some diving that you have been doing! Manhandling that much weight in mercury must have been a challenge.

Back in the day, I had some dive buddies that did deep diving in dry suits, and they looked like bottle racks due to the different mixes they were breathing at different depths, but they enjoyed the challenges.

I hope that your buddies were at least in exosuits for the Edmund Fitzgerald.

All the best,

Peter

Carrying a camera is a sure-fire way to never see anything interesting.
Leaving it at home is a sure-fire way to see something unique which you will never see again.
Ah, but cell phones!

If not for having my phone on me I wouldn't have been able to get a picture of the only elk ever seen in my area by anyone. Between that shock and trying to make sure I had my then pup under control (no idea what she would/was going to do) I was totally surprised that I was able to get an actual "shot" off.

While out for a walk yesterday, I happened across a deflated helium balloon. Not terribly unusual, but it is the twelfth I have found on my 100 aces in the last 30 years. One of the first I found bore a promotional message from a radio station in Toledo, Ohio, 300 miles southwest of here!
My dog has found a couple. I hear her barking and being really timid. Lots of fun getting her to approach them (and I sneak up behind her and spook her- she should really figure this plot out, but not yet!).

I think it weight like 35 lbs? Lot of weight underwater when you're not using other things to lift.

We switched from open circuit to closed to reduce the bottles and get better mixes for less deco penalties...not to mention saving money on gas mixes. Lots and lots of planning go into the big dives for sure, it is a fun challenge. The Edmund Fitzgerald was just going to be done with the rebreathers but ended up not happening due to some permitting/permissions then one of the divers died in an unrelated event. You don't just plug and play a team going that deep.

Last fall while mowing around customers lake on my ZT, saw this laying in the grass. It doesnt seem big, but it was 3-4 feet long.
Pretty sure its the skeletal remains of a grass carp. Thing I dont understand is how it ended up 10’ from waters edge? Would a fox try to grab it and kill it in shallow water?

I was wading through all these postings just waiting to add my "unique" story and you had to spoil it!

Wife and I were walking along our property and out in the field we ran across a dead salmon. Fish falling from the sky! No doubt how it happened, though odd and not exactly expected to see, and eagle must have dropped it- there's a river (where salmon run) about 1/2 mile away.

I've removed numerous tires and rims (front end of an old IH truck) and various garbage (someone buried the remains of an old swing set, in addition to vacuum cleaner and other such crap), but one "buried" object has me totally curious... Recently, and nowhere near where any of the usual "let's toss out trash" area are, and not appearing to be anything left from old logging operations, I ran across some orange, thicker plastic just surfacing from the ground. Because I hate the thought of knowing about stuff like that I extracted as much as I could (just a gardener's hand claw tool), but a few inches down I ran into a tree root that had grown over the plastic, which seems to indicate that this was buried some time ago. If I was going to bury treasure I'd do so out away from anywhere where folks would travel and it would be encased in something like orange plastic. I don't want to disrupt the tree root, but if hard times comes along I'm going to dig looking for buried treasure! Might have to wait around a while before you get the full story
