I do find the animals that can live in very arid climates to be very hardy, as they have to be....and yet somehow they survive. Along with wild horses (estimated 40,000+ in Nevada alone) and antelope and deer and all the other wildlife.

We have the red desert here in Wyoming and the same thing, lots of wildlife call that area home. In fact I know a guy that always hunts in the Red Desert and he always gets a deer and elk each year. The only down part of that is, they taste like sage since one of their main food sources is sage brush.
The area is basically just a big rain shadow from the Wasatch Mountains. I suspect where you're at in Nevada the same terrain is caused by the rain shadow of the Sierra Nevada's.
