wjoerob - my Garmin has "shortest route" or "fastest route" modes - it appears that yours is in the "shortest route" mode. Quick change in setup will keep you on the interstate.

Finally, we turned the voice volume down, and just kept it on to watch the map display. Another time, it told me to cross a railroad where the road don't go!
I had a Garmin that did the same thing. It would want me to exit off the freeway and get back on at the next on ramp to save distance. Out in New Mexico it was trying to send me on roads that did not exist as far as I could tell. I took it back and bought a Magellan, it has not done any of that.
