Another friend of mine does the same to unload roofing shingles at the dump, but he uses 2 tires instead of a pallet. His method is also to drive a steel rod in the ground to chain off that and pull the entire trailer with his truck. I should have asked how he gets the rod out of the ground, but forgot to ask.
My method of using the truck is effective, but I'd bet his is faster. Unfortunately, the place where I dump is on mixed asphalt/rock/dirt. Driving a rod in might be both frowned upon by the owner and difficult to remove.

But to remove a rod from dirt, just kick it in opposing directions a few times, wiggle, and withdraw. If it was driven at an angle away from the vehicle, as would want in tent-stake fashion, it needn't be hopelessly deep to do the job.
