considering a used 955 with low hours

I was looking for some advice on a 1996 955 with 70A loader and 7 backhoe. It has the hydro trans and 4x4 (do all 955's come this way?) The tractor has 80 original hours and is in
excellent condition, original owner. Would this tractor be worth $18,000. Also, I would like to get a 72" or 60" MMM for it, but was told by a JD dealer that it is not available. Would any members know if this is true?, and what options do I have for a mower?

That is a good price. I had a '88 755 and to my knowledge all of the 55 series were hydro's but I'm unsure if they were all 4x4's. The only thing I would be cautious of is the backhoe on the 55 series, they were designed to be lawn mowers on steroids not construction equipment. I think if your dealer looked hard enough he could find a belly mower for that machine, JD made them up to '98.

I have an 855, which is the little brother to the 955, and I like it. All of the x55 series (655 through 955) are hydros. I know they made belly mowers but they may no longer be in production. I have seen used ones for sale, or you could go with a 3 point mower if all else fails. It sounds like it is in extraordinary condition. I'm no expert, but the price sounds like it may be fair, given the condition. There is a web site with equipment values that exists but I don't know the address.

Those x55 series machine really hold their value, don't they! A friend of mine had an 855 for close to 10 years. When he traded (for a 4310), he got $12.5K...the tractor was offered at the dealer for $13.5K. I don't know if they got that much, but I'm sure they didn't lose any money on the deal. Mechanically, the 855 was in good shape, but it did have it's share of dents and the paint was..well, it was used hard (and maintained well) just as it was built for.

The 955 is a great tractor...like all the older Deere machines, probably overbuilt for a long life.

However....I'm not saying the price is too high...but you're in the neighborhood of new tractor prices when $18K is being discussed. Per TractorData.com, $18K is what that tractor cost new. Of course, with only 80 hours on the meter, that 955 is new, isn't it. And, the 'hoe and FEL are icing on the cake.

All that said...I'd try to dicker some... If you do buy it, you're getting a very powerful (33 Gross HP, 27 PTO HP) tractor for it's size and weight.

They are great tractors - and you can find mowers for them - they are still around. I picked up a used 60" for my 855 for $450 CDNbut I had to buy some of the brackets seperately.

However - I think the price is too high if that is $US. Go on machine finder and look around. I've seen them in Canada going for $16K with loader and mower or loader and hoe, usually with 600-800hrs. That would be closer to $12KUS. I would suggest 13.5KUS would be a good price with those hours.

At $18.5 US- I think you could likely get a brand new 790. Different tractor but brand new.

All 55 series tractors are Hydro and have mid mount PTO. 755 / 855 had 4wd optional, 955 came with 4wd.

I really like the 55 series tractors. 80 hours on a 955 is not even broke in yet. The thing I like the most about them is the size of the frame. They are big enough to do a lot of work but small enough to do the small jobs as well. I mow my yard, push snow, till my garden, run a small grain auger. and tonight I used my 1 bottom plow to cut a ditch from a low spot in the field to the road ditch all with my 755. If I ever wear this one out I am going to look for a low hour 955 4x4. I do think I would see if you could get the price down a little.
