I am going to do my 50 hour service on my NH TC25. The manual states that the tractor came standard with 10W-30 oil which is fine for my region and all. My confusion is that I thought diesels used diesel oils. This weight of oil I can only find in regular oil.
Did the manufacturer use regular motor oil or am I not finding 10W-30 diesel oil?
If it is regular motor oil should I change to Rotella or something that is diesel rated?

I am also wondering if Changing from NH134 Hydraulic oil to another hydraulic oil that is cheaper (Like TSC or Wal- Mart's Super Tech) would be O.K. to do. What do y'all do?

Thanks a whole bunch. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Yes, I would highly recommend going to a diesel rated oil. The addative package is different. I'm not big on Rotella, but there is plenty of brands from which to choose. Even though you will find as many opinions on which brand to use as there are members here, I think most all will agree that you should go with a diesel rated oil.

I've seen lots of reports and opinions on hydraulic oil, and I don't see much difference unless you go to a synthetic oil. Again, you will get plenty of opinions of whether a synthetic hydraulic oil is better or not. For me it was simple, my tractor hydraulics were quieter with synthetics, so I go with them. Is it really any better? You tell me. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Good luck! The best thing is that you actually are doing the 50 hour service. Some don't think that is important. That is one thing I will say that I firmly do believe is important. The rest; personal choice.

Read the many posts here on oil, but in no way would I use reg. motor oil in my tractor as it is not designed for diesel engines, the experts on this forum can tell you why.I have used rotella t 15w 40 in my tractors and very satisfied , the reason I use that oil is because many of the truckers and farmers up here where I live use it with good results.I use my tractor so little that I will stay with dino oil ,if I used it a great deal I would go with a syn. oil. I have changed to syn. oil for my vehicles now,but that is a different matter.Read the many posts here and it will be an education for sure.Good luck and you are correct diesel oil is not the same as reg. oil.

Anthony, I don't know about the New Holland manuals, but Kubota has been known to be a little bit behind in updating their manuals at times. Example: the manual called for 10W-30 oil with a CC or CD rating. The CC and CD ratings are obsolete. I used Chevron's Delo 400 in a 15W-40 with a CH-4 rating in my Kubotas. Most of my real farmer neighbors used either the Delo or Shell's Rotella in a 15W-40 weight. I don't think you can go wrong with those, or any of several other diesel rated oils or synthetics.

Incidentally, for several years I used Quaker State 10W-30 oils in my cars. I started that when I bought an Isuzu diesel sedan in '81 and Quaker State, at that time, had the diesel rating. In fact, it was one of the brands specifically recommended in new diesel Mercedes Benz car manuals. In later years, they dropped the diesel rating, and wondering why, I called and talked to one of their engineers. Now I don't know whether he was right or not, but he told me it wouldn't hurt a thing to use it in a diesel, BUT you would need to change oil more frequently than if you used a diesel rated oil.

Im with ya! Same problem here. You either buy "factory oil"..or ( if you can find it) Shell Rotella-T in 10W30 ( usually found in 15W-40)..or you go to a syn oil ( almost all are diesel rated) in 5W-40.

I just did my 50 hour service about a month ago and I asked my dealer about 15w40 oil, because Wally's World didn't have any 10w30 rated for diesel. I was told that the manufactuer didn't recommend 15w40 they always used 10w30. I bought my oil from them, price was within a dime per quart of Wally's.

My tractor has at least 1600 hours on it using 15-45 diesel oil.

The manual states 10-30

I got shell diesel 10-30 oil for my CK30 Kioti; it is what the manual recommends. I had to go to a local shell distributor to get it, it is hard to find.

Thanks for the replies guys.
The oil issue can be confusing and it seems that there is really no clear cut favorite. I have decided to go with the diesel oil for sure and probably with 15W-40 because that is what I see the most of. Not because everything is sold out, it's just what's stocked.
I try to stick with the dealers recommendations because I hope they know what they are talking about and not just trying to make a buck. I bought all the filters at the dealers and would like to buy their oils, but I'm not all that wealthy.
Thanks again, I really do appreciate your opinions.

Try a different kind of store. Around here I can get a 10W30 diesel rating (Mystik JT8) at the farm store but not at any auto parts store or wally world kind of place.
