JD 1025r filb
I’m torn between the JD 3046r premium cab and the kabota grand L 4060. I love everything about the cab interior on the 4060. I have both tractors priced right at $40. The jd has two extra rear hydraulic spools, the kabota has 3 rear and one on the loader. Both are loaded including radios. I have always been a JD guy and in my mind (right or wrong) thought kabota’s were cheaper than JD´s. I really like the kabota but I’m hung up on the fact that the 4060 is less hp and pto and in my mind think it should be less than the Deere in cost. I could go up to the kabota grand L4760 which is slightly more power than the 3046r but it’s $4,000.00. I’m truly confused after hours of reading and YouTube watching. Any insight is greatly appreciated. Am I working over a few hp’s? Is the 4060 comparable to the 3046r? The backblade I want to run is already on the big side for the 3046r so I’m worried I'm shooting myself in the foot going kabota.

Thanks,

The Kubota's third rear remote and the third function on the loader are worth about $1000 to $1800 (depending on what the dealer charges for installation if you were to add them later).

Some info on what you'll be doing with the tractors will get you better advice on the suitability of the power.

Sorry, I had a lengthy post detailing my uses that got deleted because the site logged me out. I will mainly be using it to maintain a mile long gravel (crusher run) gravel drive. It is steep. Think 200 foot elevation change over the mile run. I plan on using a 7’ offsetting blade with 3 hydraulic articulation. I also plan on using a land plane, light loader work (I use forks a lot) and post hole digging. Not much brush hogging. No finish mowing. I got a mid pto on both to add a front snowblower possibly and a front snow blade for the loader.

How about the Yanmar YT347? Same Yanmar engine as the John Deere, super nice cab, two rear remotes standard. Integrated third function for the front loader. Japanese quality. Less expensive than either the JD or the L4760.

You're doing an apples to oranges comparison and the 3046R quite a bit less tractor in size and capability (lighter weight, smaller size, 3 cyl vs. 4 cyl, etc). You should really be comparing the Kubota Grand L models and the Deere 4000 series, such as the 4044R if you're trying to find equipment of comparable capability.

Edit: Just noticed there's another thread on these same tractors plus New Holland going on at the moment.

Under maybe 75 hp, Kubota is considered the market leader in the US. There are many good brands and tractors to choose from, but Kubota and Deere are top-of-the-line manufacturers with prices to match. However the deal you get is very much up to the individual dealer, no matter what brand, so it pays to shop around even within a particular brand.

The best way to shop for tractors is to list your tasks first, then determine how much bare tractor weight you need to SAFELY accomplish your tasks. Bare tractor weight is a tractor specification easily found in sales brochures and web sites, readily comparable across tractor brands and tractor models.

For most tractor tasks greater chassis weight is more important than tractor horsepower. This tractor fundamental is difficult for people new to tractors to comprehend. It takes a 50% increase in bare tractor weight before you notice a significant tractor capability increase. It takes a 100% increase in bare tractor weight to elicit MY-OH-MY!

Heavier tractors have more tractive power pulling ground contact implements. Greater mass of heavy-chassis tractors increases tractor stability when transporting loads in the FEL bucket, the most rollover prone of routine tractor tasks. Heavier tractors have larger wheels and tires better able to bridge holes, ruts and downed tree limbs, yielding a smoother, less disturbing passage over rough ground.

Safe hillside operation demands more tractor weight than flat land operation. Heavier tractors have wider wheel spreads making heavier tractors less laterally unstable. Rear wheel spreads may be decreased or increased after jacking up the rear.

Shop your weight range within tractor brands. Budget will eliminate some choices. Collect a dealer brochure for each tractor model in your weight range. I spreadsheet tractor and implement specs, often a revealing exercise. I have a column for cost per pound.

Tractors under 3,000 pounds bare weight are offered in one configuration. Most, such as the high volume kubota standard L series, are sparely equipped to hit competitive price points. Others, such as the Yanmar YT235 and Kubota B2650/B3350 series, include enhanced productivity and comfort components.

Most tractors under 3,000 pounds bare weight are operated in residential applications on one to five fairly flat acres. These "residential tractors" fit in a typical garage.

Tractors over 3,000 pounds bare weight are generally offered in a utilitarian configuration and a deluxe configuration, on a common chassis. Deluxe kit enhances productivity and operating comfort ~~~ but you have to pay. Many tractors over 3,000 pounds bare weight are too tall to fit in a typical garage, even with ROPS folded.

Selling a used tractor is easy. Selling light implements in order to buy heavier, wider, implements for a heavier tractor you take a hit in depreciation. Passing time with multiple browsers is a pain. ((Ask me how I know.))

For most new to tractors a quality dealer, reasonably close, available for coaching, is important. Dealer proximity is less important to others, well experienced with tractors, who perform their own maintenance. My kubota dealer is six miles away. I feel my local dealer continues to add value to my equipment.

Horsepower is only a primary consideration operating PTO powered implements.

BUY ENOUGH TRACTOR.

Deere 3046r = 2,900 pounds bare tractor weight.
Deere 3046r has a turbo-charged engine. Do you want this additional engine complexity?

Kubota L4060 = 3,500 pounds bare tractor weight. Naturally aspirated engine.

600 pounds is a 20% difference.

You should spreadsheet tractor data while shopping for a $40,000 tractor.

Personally, if determined on a cabbed Kubota I would purchase an L4760 rather than the L4060. An L4060 with cab and air conditioning will be marginal operating a six foot Rotary Cutter. The prime reason for purchasing a cab for most people is to mow comfortably in warm weather. When eventually you want to sell the tractor PTO power limitation will dramatically thin the rank of potential buyers.

IF YOU WANT A JOHN DEERE, BUY A JOHN DEERE.

Winchester, Virginia, snowfall is 22 inches. The average US city gets 26 inches of snow per year.

A heavy rear blade and FEL bucket with snow skids can move considerable snow.
Is your primary road transportation, car or truck, 4-WD?

Forward facing mid-PTOs are subject to becoming stopped with dirt in forestry work.

If you delete the radio from your order you will have a safer tractor and spend less money replacing cab glass.

I trust Deere and Kubota dealers are within a few miles of your property.

I live right close to the OP in Marshall, VA. Head on down to McMichael's in Gainesville for Yanmar, Kioti, and NH. New Virginia tractor in Warrenton for John Deere, and there's also a good Kubota dealer and another Yanmar dealer in Culpeper.
