Concrete, asphalt or pavers

/ Concrete, asphalt or pavers #41
My driveway is 1/3 mile and all gravel. I share the 1st half with the neighbor and it's always getting potholes in certain area's, I think because he and his visitors drive too fast on it. We need at least an additional tri-axle this year on the shared portion. One estimate was $550 for 2A modified. No stone has been added in at least 5 years.

My portion I'm very careful about grading and snow plowing to lose as little stone as possible. It would be nice to have asphalt at the top by the house so it could be plowed better and melt out, just not sure it's worth the cost. And since I don't plan on ever moving resale doesn't matter. We don't get that much snow and could in theory get away w/o plowing at all or minimal.

That paver machine is too cool for words. And just watching those guys set those pavers in the machine makes my hands and back ache. Imagine 8 hours of doing that. each and every day.

I'm looking for a process to tear up my old asphalt, reheat it, mix in some new, lay it back down.
I've about 1,000 sq yards of asphalt that is requiring patching/replacement.

That may be really hard to find. I talked to a guy today who said they were almost done booking for 2022 for the asphalt side of the business. Hauling in rock and concrete side still had room.

Here's another one; I love that it takes the bricks from a pallet, scoots them sideways to make the correct offset and drops them in place.

I really don't understand why they aren't more common in the US.

All the best,

Peter

No, I meant a PROCESS. How to tear up the old asphalt, fix any base issue, heat up the stuff I tore up and mix it with unknown (new asphalt, millings,???), pour it back down, all DIM (do it myself), on my own time.
Sort of like a Zamboni for asphalt.

Have a look for a roadbed heater; it is kind of a portable kiln that drops over the road bed with the problem areas, heats it up, and then you add in however much extra mix you need, rake it around, and then reroll it. It makes a cohesive unit out of fractured or potholed asphalt.

Otherwise, the only method that I am familiar with to get a good solid road bed is to hot seal every single crack, oil and fill the low spots with hot mix, roll and compact the hot mix, apply tack oil, geotextile, more tack oil, and then either pave the whole thing, or apply tar and chip seal it twice. That assumes that you don't have some major underlying issue with the roadway itself. If you do, everything else is just lipstick on a pig. (in my view...)

All the best,

Peter

I think they makes such a beast but I’ve never heard of a homeowner sized unit.
