As mentioned earlier, get XP Pro not XP Home! I've been fooling with XP Home for 6 months and it complete garbage. I finally got XP Pro (installed it fresh)and it works very nice. All the troubles I had before are gone. I have a computer at work that has the XP Pro on it for 2 months and it work very well.
