Sounds like your hard drive has gone to the great bit bucket in the sky. When you power on do you hear a drumming noise after the disk spins up?
I have used Ubuntu Linux for email, chat and surfing. It's a great alternative.
When the drive makers went to 7200 RPM drives, the bearings couldn't take it. The newer drives have fluid bearings instead of ball bearings. SnowRidge said:Before doing anything else, I would check the CMOS ram settings. They can be corrupted by a worm or virus. Run SETUP on your machine and set everything back to the defaults. You have nothing to lose by doing so. The key combination that lets you get into SETUP usually flashes on the screen when the machine is first powered on. Give it a try.
