I didn't realize how lucky I was to always have clean, neat clothes, food on the table three times every day... even something for dessert every night.

When I was in high school, and heard some of the kid's stories about their home life, I realized how lucky I was. Great parents, nice clothes (except for those damn corduroy pants), good food, and nice house.

I was taught that "God helps those who help themselves"... but also to help those out who are less fortunate.

My senior year in HS I wrote a paper for a friend, who was retaking Junior year English and needed the paper to pass. I don't know what his situation was but it seemed like once they reached high school his parents gave them a place to stay but expected the kids to feed and clothe themselves.
I will never say that what I did was right. Yet because of me he graduated from high school and has been working at the same auto recycling place for 40+ years.

aka "Qualudes"... popular in late 70's and early 80's, horrible narcotic. I saw people that I knew become zombies... would pee or crap their pants in the bar and stumble around like nothing happened, absolutely incoherent. I guess they were having "fun" but sure didn't look like it.
